Amy Lynn off the shoulder top asos flower sunglasses

I love the off the shoulder trend that’s been absolutely everywhere over the summer, but it can be a tricky look to pull off if you’re curvy. I’ve tried loads of tops in the search for one that fits across the chest but doesn’t hang like a sack on the waist. I was determined to find “the one” before Summer fades away, so I was delighted when I found this off the shoulder chambray frill top at Asos. It’s a very pale blue, almost an off-white, which contrasts well with dark denim but would also look great with red or pastel-hued jeans.

The thing I love most about the top is the straps because I feel a bit too exposed with some off the shoulder tops…

The material is lovely and light so it’s perfect for hot weather. It isn’t stretchy, and it is quite snug on the bust but the ruffle cleverly disguises that. The thing I love most about the top is the straps because I feel a bit too exposed with some off the shoulder tops…they might only be two small straps but they make a world of difference for me!

It’s not often I try something on and don’t want to take it off, but that’s how I felt wearing this top. In fact I kept it on for a rare child-free evening out with my husband, even though common sense told me not to if there would be food involved. Typically we ended up going for a curry (bad move, I know) and yep, I spilt food on it! Thankfully a soak in Vanish Gold got it out after everything else had failed. Phew. Next time I’ll either wear black or a bib.

J by Jasper Conran mustard drape dress Angel Jackson snakeskin bag

I’ve been feeling a few pangs of guilt lately about the amount of clothes in my wardrobe that are still unworn with the tags attached. The time has come to decide if I can make them work for me or if it’s time to let them go. One such item is this J by Jasper Conran mustard jersey dress. When I bought it I loved the colour, the draping at the front and the length – just below the knee is my preferred length in a dress. But when I tried it on at home I wasn’t sure about the high neckline and cap sleeves, which tend to make my top half look square. As a result it’s been in the wardrobe for several years looking great on the hanger but taking up much needed space. I decided to give it one last chance and to my surprise I quite liked it. It’s a bit clingy but it’s double layered so it’s not see-through.

Usually I like a bit of contrast in an outfit but I went with a neutral-coloured shoe for a leg-lengthening effect.

Usually I like a bit of contrast in an outfit but I went with a neutral-coloured shoe for a leg-lengthening effect. Again, with the handbag I considered a dark colour – mustard works really well with cobalt, aubergine and deep red – but I liked how the gold chain strap on my Angel Jackson snakeskin bag tied in with the gold sunglasses and jewellery, while the main colour of the bag matches the dress. Maybe I’ll try a bold, contrasting colour next time. So it looks like the dress is a keeper after all.

Do you have clothes hanging in the wardrobe with the tags still attached? Surely I can’t be the only one 😉

Breton Stripes and Asos Culottes

Breton stripes are a wardrobe staple of mine, so where better to embrace the nautical chic look than an evening out in Brittany? This was the last night of our holiday so we ended it in style by going for a meal by the sea…just the two of us thanks to Grandad entertaining the little one. The restaurant we chose is very close to where we went for my Birthday Meal in St-Quay-Portrieux. I didn’t take any skirts or dresses with me so that narrowed down the outfit choices to jeans or trousers. On a typical beach holiday where I’m either by the pool or lounging by the sea all day I take mostly skirts and dresses, but Brittany isn’t really like that, at least in my experience, so I feel more comfortable in trousers or shorts.

…my aim is to wear at least 80% of the clothes and shoes I pack when I go away.

I toyed with the idea of wearing jeans again but I’d packed these Asos culottes at the last minute and didn’t want to take them home unworn – my aim is to wear at least 80% of the clothes and shoes I pack when I go away. I applied the same logic to footwear: I could have worn my Stan Smiths with this outfit but I wanted a change from trainers and flip flops, and these gold espadrilles are very comfortable. My only gripe with the culottes is that they crease very easily and they are a nightmare to iron, at least if you’re like me and hate ironing (and are also very bad at it). While they score highly on the comfort level they are not the best to take on holiday.

I was extremely grateful for my poncho that evening, snuggling underneath it against the cool evening breeze.

We’d been very lucky with the weather but I knew as soon as the sun went down it was going to feel cool…which is why I took my beautiful grey cashmere poncho from Hope with me. You may remember when I went to the 3040 Blogger Meet in May we were all given a stunning pink poncho (I’m sure those of you who were there can’t forget!) and then I only went and won another one in the raflle! I was extremely grateful for my poncho that evening, snuggling underneath it against the cool evening breeze. I don’t think any holiday wardrobe should be without one of these!

Equipment silk Paris top Gap jeans Stan Smith trainers Zara jacket

We usually go on our Summer holiday to my Dad’s in Brittany during August, but this year we made the most of the school term ending early and went in July. This meant that the weather was much better and I got to spend my birthday there. To celebrate we had a family meal out at a lovely restaurant called La Passerelle in the seaside town of St-Quay-Portrieux. People dress casually in Brittany so I wore jeans and my new Adidas Stan Smith trainers in white and rose gold (a birthday present from my husband). My trusty Zara navy jacket goes everywhere with me because it’s perfect for pairing with jeans. It was quite a warm evening so I wore a silk Paris print top from Equipment.

I find it quite easy to pack for Brittany now and streamline my packing to a capsule of sensible footwear, jeans, t-shirts and a couple of jumpers.

I never bother taking heels on holiday any more because they’re just not practical. For this trip I just took FitFlops, a pair of low wedge espadrilles and my Stan Smith trainers. Confession time…I also took my running shoes but didn’t use them due to the heat and, ahem, copious amounts of wine. When in France and all that. I find it quite easy to pack for Brittany now and streamline my packing to a capsule of sensible footwear, jeans, t-shirts and a couple of jumpers. This time we were lucky enough to have beach weather so a couple of bikinis and a cover up went in the case too. If you follow me on Instagram you might have seen some of the beautiful beaches we went to. Due to the sun setting so late we were going later on in the afternoon and sunbathing until 8pm some days!

My Dad and step-mum are regular visitors to La Passerelle and know the owners well. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere with wonderful food and views of the harbour.

Scallops birthday meal at La Passerelle st Quay

Scallops are one of my favourite foods and luckily for me they are in plentiful supply in Brittany, so choosing what to order wasn’t difficult. The main course was delicious, as was the tarte au citron meringuée (basically lemon meringue tart) I had for dessert – complete with an indoor firework! Afterwards we took a stroll around the harbour, enjoying the late evening sun. Perfect.
