Key Trends For Your Autumn Wardrobe Update

Now we’ve bid farewell to the fickle month of September it’s time to think about those essential wardrobe updates for Autumn. I don’t know about you, but I can’t fully embrace the new season’s trends in September because it can still feel like Summer (if we’re lucky). The first day of October marks a shift in the way I dress. Now I can confidently put the Summer clothes and shoes away and start thinking about how to incorporate the hottest trends for A/W into my everyday wardrobe.

I’ve selected five key trends for your Autumn wardrobe update, all under £50

When looking for new season buys I try to steer of anything that will quickly look dated. Luckily we see a lot of recurring themes in terms of print and texture so chances are you may already be ahead of the game. I’ve selected five key trends for your Autumn wardrobe update, all under £50.

Sock boots

One trend that has definitely tickled my fashion fancy is the red boot. Ankle boots are probably my favourite style of footwear on account of their versatility and comfort. Plus, red is my favourite colour, so it’s a win-win situation for me. I already have a pair of western style boots in red, but I couldn’t resist a pair of mid-calf sock boots with their bunion-friendly stretchy fabric. (Mine are by Truffle from Asos). Admittedly, mid-calf can be a tricky length, especially if you’re not blessed with legs like a giraffe (and sadly I’m not). Wearing sock boots with wide leg cropped jeans or a skirt that ends just above the ankle avoids the leg-shortening effect, while still showing off your fab footwear.

The block heel or wedge is the most practical for everyday wear, and thankfully there’s no shortage of choice in this department either

If mid-calf isn’t for you there are plenty of ankle boots in various styles to add to your footwear arsenal. The kitten heel is having an unexpected revival. I didn’t think I’d ever wear them again but I should know by now that everything goes full circle in fashion! The block heel or wedge is the most practical for everyday wear, and thankfully there’s no shortage of choice in this department either.

Heritage prints

Prince of Wales check, houndstooth and plaid/tartan are classic prints that never date. A coat in one of these “heritage prints” will instantly breathe fresh life into your new season wardrobe. You don’t have to spend a fortune  either – some of the supermarkets have some great coats that won’t break the bank. If you want to ease yourself into heritage prints gently, accessories are a good place to start. A bag or pair of shoes in a classic check print will serve you well over the years.

The statement blouse

Everyone should have a statement blouse in their wardrobe. They instantly elevate a pair of jeans to create a casual yet put together look. Team one with a pair of smart trousers or pencil skirt and you’ve got a sassy and sophisticated outfit to take you seamlessly from office to night out. Think ruffles, frills, pussy bows, bold colour and dark floral print for an injection of glamour.

Hats

Wearing hats is one of my favourite things about the colder months. For someone who never wore hats until a few years ago, I’ve been making up for lost time. I now have a nice little collection, and as luck would have it, I bought a beret from eBay a few months ago. And it really was luck because I had no idea that berets would be the hat of the season this A/W. If you can’t afford the leather Dior version (and let’s face it, who can?) have a look at some of the budget options below. Not even a hint of Frank Spencer.

Velvet

I love velvet but it doesn’t always love me. It has the tendency to add pounds where I least want them. For that reason I approach it with caution. In fact I have very little velvet in my wardrobe, and what I do have is confined to shoes and bags. That may well change though because I’ve added a few items to my never ending wish list. One of those is a velvet jacket. I actually went about getting one last winter but couldn’t find the right one at the right price. My mission continues, but in the meantime I’ve got my eye on those burgundy flats from Asos and the Mango belt.

What’s your favourite trend for A/W? I’d love to hear how you’re updating your wardrobe for the new season!
