My 5 favourite Summer trends

Well, it’s Sunday again and I don’t know where the week has gone, never mind the weekend. They seem to go by in a flash. I’m in the middle of a very busy period at work and have barely had time to get the essential things done. Needless to say, come Friday evening there’s a humungus pile of clothes on the bed in the spare room (what is now known as “Blog HQ”). Thankfully the weather has been great so that has made getting ready a bit easier.

…if you’re looking to add a few updates to your wardrobe I’ve picked out my 5 favourite Summer trends.

Seeing so many clothes laid out, particularly my most recent purchases, made me think about what my favourite Summer trends are. In general, I’m not greatly influenced by trends; if I like them I’ll buy into them, otherwise I’ll steer clear. But this Summer there are plenty of styles that I’m more than happy to get on board with. So if you’re looking to add a few updates to your wardrobe I’ve picked out my 5 favourite Summer trends.

Polka dots

To be honest I’ve always been more of a stripes person than spots, but that’s changed this season. When Jacqui chose polka dots for our Style Not Age March challenge she was really ahead of the game! Since then I’ve been looking to add more dotty clothes and accessories to my wardrobe. For the bargain price of £19.50 I had to have these fabulous slingbacks from Marks and Spencer. A note on sizing: they are a wide fit and come up quite big. I’m usually a 7.5 or 8 but needed a 7 in these. I also picked up this lovely bag from Zara when I ordered the green midi dress. If you don’t want to dress head to toe in polka dots, accessories are a great way to tap into the trend. You could even mix them with stripes for a fun black and white outfit.

Straw bags

When I featured my cute crab bag a few weeks ago most of you agreed that straw bags are a fabulous Summer accessory. Whether it’s a round crossbody bag or a larger shopper, there is something to suit everyone’s tastes and needs. This pineapple beach bag is perfect for holidays, while this black circle crossbody would take you from day into evening.

Midi dresses

When it comes to dresses, the midi is my all time favourite. They are elegant, flattering and very versatile. A midi dress can be work-appropriate (if it’s not sleeveless), occasion-approriate and also a perfect outfit choice for a day out sight-seeing and shopping. Maybe not a trend as such, because it never really goes out of fashion, but this season there are some real beauties out there. From tea dresses to shirt dresses to a classic wrap dress, everyone needs a least one great midi in their wardrobe.

Ruffles

I’m glad to say that this is another trend that never really seems to disappear. Chances are you already own something with frills or ruffles so you won’t have to hit the shops. You can keep it subtle with a ruffle detail on shoes, or really go to town with a bold dress or blouse. The mix print wrap dress I wore for an anniversary lunch recently has ruffle sleeves (and also happens to be midi length so ticks two boxes!). On one of my lunchtime shopping dashes in Leeds a month or so ago I picked up this gorgeous red ruffle blouse with a 70% discount! I had to size up to a 14 because the fit isn’t generous across the bust, but who cares about what’s printed in the label? Not me!

Lilac

This pastel hue has grown steadily on me over the Spring and now I’m craving more of it. To be honest, it’s not the most flattering colour on me, and consequently not one that features much in my outfits. But that’s not to say I can’t incorporate it into my wardrobe with a few well-chosed pieces. Shoes, bags and jewellery in soft lilac shades compliment grey or other pastel colours beautifully. I spotted this gorgeous faux leather bag in Marks and Spencer for just £19.50 and was seriously tempted to buy it. This Hobbs high neck blouse is also calling my name.

So those are my 5 favourite Summer trends…which one do you like best? Or maybe you love them all…I’d love to hear your thoughts! Btw, due to being incredibly busy at work I’m a bit behind with link ups and replying to comments but I’ll get there! I really do appreciate all of your comments and retweets 🙂

For once, I absolutely love all the new trends! I couldn’t be happier.

  6. I’m lacking a straw bag and wish I bought one already. Now I’m at that stage where I’m wondering how long the trend will last for and therefore is it worth the investment. I think a tote is the safest bet. Gosh – that’s how easily I can talk myself into it! xx

  7. Polka dots and straw bags, yes! For some reason, I have not been feeling dresses so much lately and last spring and summer that was all I wore. I am sure I will get back to them. Thanks for sharing your fun favorites, Emma!
