Paris Day 2 | Louvre and Sacré-Cœur

August 18, 2014

Louvre pyramid

Our second full day in Paris was just as busy as the first. We had intended to visit both the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay in one day, but after a few hours in the Louvre we realised you need the best part of a day to do it justice, so we decided to leave the Musée d’Orsay for another visit (hopefully in the not-too-distant future!)

Paris Louvre

Of course the Mona Lisa is the Louvre’s big attraction, but there is so much more to see. I’ve picked out a few of my favourites to share with you.

Venus de Milo

She seems to be saying “There there dear, it’s really not that small”.

Gabrielle d'Estrées et une de ses sœurs

A rather saucy painting of Gabrielle d’Estrées, mistress of French King Henry IV, and one of her sisters. Tweak. Maybe she’s trying to tune in to Radio 1.

Tour de France

We hadn’t planned our trip to coincide with the end of the Tour de France but nevertheless, it made the weekend that little bit more special. After leaving the Louvre and having lunch, we had just enough time to wander up the Champs-Elysées to see the cyclists whizzing by….again and again. You see we hadn’t realised that the final stage involved going up and down the Champs-Elysées several times and it just so happened that we’d stopped outside Sephora, so while the husband took loads of photos I treated myself to a little shopping spree!

As tired as we were, we just had to see the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, which was a ten minute walk from our hotel. The view from the hill is spectacular – it was worth the trek up all the steps. We realised afterwards that our metro tickets worked on the funicular! Oh well, it was a good leg workout . I loved Montmartre, it has a really great vibe about it. Having stayed in Paris three times now, each time in a different area, this was definitely my favourite.

Paris from Montmatre

I have one more post to come on my trip to the City of Light, so until then…

À bientôt!
