Styling a Long Silk Gown With Streetwear

Well, I’m just back from a wonderful holiday in Abu Dhabi and looking through the photos I can’t help but wish I was still there. All good things must come to an end though, and tomorrow I’ll face the mountain of washing and ironing! We did a few outfit photos during the holiday which I’ll be posting over the next week or so.

Styling a long silk gown with streetwear, such as a denim jacket or chambray shirt…is a great way to get more wear from such an elegant garment.

I have quite a few tried and tested pieces that I always take away with me, but this time I wanted to refresh my holiday wardrobe. Fortunately, I was kindly sent this gorgeous silk gown by NK iMode just in time for my trip. The Gypsy Diva Long Gown in Ultra Violet is such a beautiful design and colour. The light and luxurious silk makes it ideal for sultry climes, while the maxi length makes it surprisingly versatile. Styling a long silk gown with streetwear, such as a denim jacket or chambray shirt (as I’ve done here) is a great way to get more wear from such an elegant garment.

The front of the gown is quite low cut so layering a shirt over it was sensible in what’s still quite a conservative country. Generally in resorts in Abu Dhabi and Dubai there is much more freedom regarding clothing for women than in public places such as shopping malls. However, I prefer to cover my cleavage and legs (when I’m not by the pool) out of respect for the cultural conventions.

I just had to show you the stretch lace section at the back though. This stunning design feature makes the gown very comfortable and means it fits perfectly. Wearing a bra is out of the question but the straps are adjustable so the girls were safely contained!

How would you style this silk dress? Would you keep it elegant or opt for a streetwear look?

Marks an Spencer Sunshine Yellow Dress in Brittany

I’m just back from a wonderful holiday in Brittany where we took advantage of the beautiful surroundings for these photos. I’m very lucky that my dad lives in such a picturesque part of the world which is only an hour’s flight away. We go every Summer but I’m hoping to make more frequent trips, even if it’s only for a few days with hand luggage. I’m not one to travel light but you really don’t need to take much (note to self!) as smart casual is the norm in Brittany.

At first I was unsure about this dress, but when I took a moment in the changing room to envisage how I’d wear it I was sold on it.

I packed mostly casual clothes, with a couple of pairs of culottes and two dresses – this yellow one and my striped White Stuff dress which I bought for Madrid last September. I picked up this yellow dress in M&S recently when I popped in to collect an online order. At the same time I also bought some bright pink culottes which I’ll be featuring on the blog soon. Both were in the sale so longer available but I’ve found some other gorgeous yellow dresses for you in the Shop the Post gallery. At first I was unsure about this dress, but when I took a moment in the changing room to envisage how I’d wear it I was sold on it. It has a slip under it so no worries about it being see through.

Wearing this Marks & Spencer sunshine yellow dress in Brittany complimented the stunning array of hydrangeas lining the country lanes.

We were quite lucky with the weather considering it can be very changeable, just like in the UK. There was a little bit of rain, but for the most part it was warm, even when it was overcast. We managed three trips to the beach which pleased the kids (Isobel has a French playmate when we visit so they keep each other amused!). As well as enjoying the seaside, we enjoyed exploring the little hamlets and admiring the beautiful flowers in full bloom. Wearing this Marks & Spencer sunshine yellow dress in Brittany complimented the stunning array of hydrangeas lining the country lanes.

The low wedge of these Clarks gold espadrilles add a bit of height, which I think works best with the midi length of the dress.

Apart from trainers and FitFlops I only took my gold espadrilles and a pair of flat sandals. I’ve learned from experience that taking heels on holiday is almost always a waste of time and case space. The low wedge of these Clarks gold espadrilles add a bit of height, which I think works best with the midi length of the dress. I take this beige bag on every holiday because it goes with everything and holds plenty. My straw hat is another holiday wardrobe hero; it’s survived being crammed into a case countless times. It’s getting a bit battered now but for only a few quid it’s been one of my best buys.Marks an Spencer Sunshine Yellow Dress in Brittany

The drawstring neckline of the dress meant I didn’t need a necklace so I just added a ring and bracelet. The matching wrist ties are a really pretty feature of the dress; cinching in the sleeves shows off a bracelet perfectly. This one is from Azuni and is part of a bundle I won in a Facebook competition. It’s actually the second time I’ve won jewellery from them…lucky me eh? 😉

Do you like wearing yellow or do you steer clear? It’s link up day so scroll down and share what you’ve been wearing!
