Sephora Paris haul

My birthday trip to Paris in July gave me the chance to pop into Sephora for a little beauty retail therapy. I'd heard lots of good things about the brand from other bloggers so in the relatively short time I had (impatient husband pacing up and down the Champs Élysées!) I managed to select a few items that I liked the look of. The nude lipstick must have really caught my eye because I managed to buy two exactly the same! I also picked up a more adventurous shade of purple, purely on a whim. Both shades look quite sheer on the swatches but they are more matte in texture. Personally I prefer a more glossy texture as I find matte lipsticks can be be rather drying, especially during the colder weather. The nude shade has tiny shimmery particles which don't really show up in the photos. Sephora's range of shades is impressive but I was disappointed with the staying power. I had to reapply frequently throughout the day. At around €11 they are reasonably priced, but there are drugstore lipsticks available at a similar price point which I think are just as good if not better.

The first thing I noticed about the lipliners was that they are a bit shorter than most other brands. That aside, the shades look very wearable so I picked up two neutral shades. The texture is creamy and quite soft, which I liked, but the colour payoff is a bit of a let down. Firstly, they are much lighter on application than they look. Also, like the lipsticks they slide off with the first sip of coffee in the morning. I actually lost the lighter pencil not long after buying it, but if I'm honest I'm really not that bothered. If I were to buy one of these again I'd go for a much darker shade, but then again I'd probably spend a bit more and buy Mac.

I picked up a purple lipgloss to either layer over the lipstick for added shine and moisture or to wear on its own for a sheer and natural look. It has a really lovely shimmer to it, and although it looks quite pale in the photo it does add a nice amount of colour to the lips. The texture is just right for me – not too sticky or gloopy, but just thick enough to give it staying power and keep lips feeling hydrated.

I'll be reviewing the eye shadow palette, foundation and powder in a separate post.

Have you tried any Sephora products and if so how do you rate them?

October skincare haul

A change in the weather calls for a skincare rethink and this month I’ve got plenty of new products to try out. The best thing is they were all incredible bargains! My local Factory Shop is selling Sanctuary skincare at rock bottom prices, with gift sets at just £6 and moisturisers and serums for £5. Naturally I snapped up a few items for myself and I may well store a few more away for Christmas presents. I’m most excited about trying the 30 Day Youth Revolution…I love those peel-off face masks!

The cherry on the cake was this gift with purchase for spending £20 on skincare. I wasn’t expecting it, but it was a nice surprise at the checkout!

The second amazing skincare bargain I bagged is this set from Sk:n which was a Groupon offer. The bundle is said to be worth £140 and it was being offered on Groupon for just £25.  I had never tried the brand before but for that price I thought it was worth a punt.  The only slight downside was I had to collect it from one of the Sk:n clinics as home delivery was not an option. Luckily there is one a short tram ride from where I work near Manchester so it wasn’t too much of an inconvenience, especially for that price. There were different options to choose from depending on skin type. I opted for the anti-ageing set which should have included a neck cream, but they had run out of that so gave me a cream to treat mature and sun-damaged skin instead. Included in the set is a voucher for £25 off a treatment at the clinic. I’ll be testing out all of these products and posting a review soon!

Have you tried any of these products and if so what did you think to them?

Today's post is all about a lovely skincare range I stumbled upon at my local artisan market which comes to town every month. Now, I have to confess that I've become so fixated with the big skincare brands that I don't usually give smaller unknown ones a second thought, but in this case I'm glad I made the exception. I spent quite a while talking about the products to Julie who founded Juel following years of suffering from eczema and contact dermatitis. After trying many products over the years she developed her own range of skincare products using a team of experts for research and development. Juel uses only high quality raw materials and is particularly good for people with eczema and psoriasis (Julie tells me she has had very good feedback from her customers to testify to this). This really resonated with me as last winter I had a very bad flare up of eczema on my eyelids. It was the first time I'd suffered from it and was it almost certainly caused by stress. I tried various creams and gels but nothing would calm it, until I relented and got some steroid cream from the doctor – something I'd been trying to avoid as it thins the skin.

Anyway after trying all the products on the Juel stall several times I decided to buy the Facial Oil Elixir as a facial oil had been on my wish list for a while. I've been using it several times a week at night over the last couple of months and it really does make a difference to my skin – it feels and looks smoother, plumper and softer. One of the key ingredients is squalane (a more stable version of squalene) which has antibacterial properties, prevents UV damage and the formation of age spots, as well as promoting cell growth. Squalane also closely resembles sebum (the protective oil secreted by the skin) making it easy for the skin to absorb. There has been some controversy over the use of squalane in beauty products as it used to be extracted from the livers of endangered sharks, although most if not all companies now use botanical sources. Other skin-boosting oils included in this elixir are rosehip, which contains high levels of vitamins A, C and E, argan oil, and thistle oil, which is high in essential fatty acids omega 3 and 6. A few drops go a long way and the 30ml bottle at £14.99 is really good value for money considering how long it will last. The oil has quite a sweet smell but it isn't too overpowering.

When you discover a new range of skincare it's easy to get carried away with a great sales pitch and invest heavily only to regret it later and leave it all gathering dust and taking up precious space in the bathroom cabinet. We've all done it haven't we? For that reason I only bought one product but after testing the Intense Moisturiser and Anti-Aging Cream on the backs of my hands I was kicking myself later for not picking up one of those too. My hands have never felt so soft and I couldn't stop stroking them for the rest of the day.

As well as skincare Juel has the most amazing colognes and body lotions. I always think the word cologne sounds really old-fashioned and not very appealing but these smell every bit as good as another rather more famous range of colognes in my opinion. The lime & mandarin and peony & pomegranate are my favourites. I can't wait for the Christmas markets now so I can stock up!

You can find Juel Facial Oil Elixir and the rest of the range here.

Have you stumbled upon any beauty gems recently? I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.
