Jeans and a Jacket by the Sea

A simple jacket and jeans combination is one of my favourite outfits. Casual but smart, this classic pairing is appropriate for so many situations. On my recent holiday to Brittany we had a little shopping trip to Paimpol, a charming little town with some fabulous shops. I聽spotted this jacket on a sale rail reduced to 43 euros, which is a real bargain considering the quality. My dad kindly bought it for me as a birthday treat. I also have my dad to thank for the necklace, which he brought back from a recent trip to New Zealand 馃檪

This combination of jeans and a jacket by the sea seems to match the blue sky and white boats in the harbour perfectly.

I decided to wear it for a meal out in St Quay on our last night there. Last year we were there for my birthday and ate in the same restaurant. I wore a similar outfit then: jeans, jacket and a printed silk top. Since then I’ve become full vegetarian, which isn’t easy in France. When I ate fish and seafood it was so easy, especially on the coast. I thought I might be able to order a salad without meat or fish, or maybe a pizza…but I was wrong.聽I ended up having another omelette (I ate a lot of those in France!) and felt like an egg bound chicken by the end of the holiday.

Despite the lack of vegetarian options it was a lovely meal and the perfect opportunity to snap some outfit photos. This combination of jeans and a jacket by the sea seems to match the blue sky and white boats in the harbour perfectly.

I’m keeping this week’s link up post short and sweet because as I write I’m about to head off to Switzerland for a few days…I’ll keep you posted on聽Instagram! Scroll down to share what you’ve been wearing!

Marks an Spencer Sunshine Yellow Dress in Brittany

I’m just back from a wonderful holiday in Brittany where we took advantage of the beautiful surroundings for these photos. I’m very lucky that my dad lives in such a picturesque part of the world which is only an hour’s flight away. We go every Summer but I’m hoping to make more frequent trips, even if it’s only for a few days with hand luggage. I’m not one to travel light but you really don’t need to take much (note to self!)聽as smart casual is the norm in Brittany.

At first I was unsure about this dress, but when I took a moment in the changing room to envisage聽how I’d wear it I was sold on it.

I packed mostly casual clothes, with a couple of pairs of culottes and two dresses – this yellow one and my striped White Stuff dress which I bought for Madrid last September. I picked up this yellow dress in M&S recently when I popped in to collect an online order. At the same time I聽also bought some bright pink culottes which I’ll be featuring on the blog soon. Both were in the sale so longer available but I’ve found some other gorgeous yellow dresses for you in the Shop the Post gallery. At first I was unsure about this dress, but when I took a moment in the changing room to envisage聽how I’d wear it I was sold on it. It has a slip under it so no worries about it being see through.

We were quite lucky with the weather considering it can be very changeable, just like in the UK. There was聽a little bit of rain, but for the most part it was warm,聽even when it was overcast. We managed three trips to the beach which pleased the kids (Isobel has a French playmate when we visit so they keep each other amused!). As well as enjoying the seaside, we enjoyed exploring the little hamlets聽and admiring the beautiful flowers in full bloom.聽Wearing this Marks & Spencer sunshine yellow dress in Brittany complimented the stunning聽array of hydrangeas lining聽the country lanes.

The low wedge of these Clarks gold espadrilles聽add聽a bit of height, which I think聽works best with the midi length of the dress.

Apart from trainers and FitFlops I only took my gold espadrilles and a pair of flat sandals. I’ve learned from experience that taking heels on holiday is almost always a waste of time and case space. The low wedge of these Clarks gold espadrilles add聽a bit of height, which I think works best with the midi length of the dress. I take this聽beige bag on every holiday because it goes with everything and holds plenty. My straw hat is another holiday wardrobe hero; it’s survived being crammed into a case countless times. It’s getting a bit battered now but for only a few quid it’s been one of my best buys.Marks an Spencer Sunshine Yellow Dress in Brittany

The drawstring neckline of the dress meant I didn’t need a necklace so I just added a ring and bracelet. The matching wrist ties are a really pretty feature of the dress; cinching in the sleeves shows off a bracelet perfectly. This one is from Azuni and is part of a bundle I won in a Facebook competition. It’s actually the second time I’ve won jewellery from them…lucky me eh? 馃槈

Breton Stripes and Asos Culottes

Breton stripes are a wardrobe staple of mine, so where better to embrace the nautical chic look than聽an evening out in Brittany? This was the last night of our holiday so we ended it in style by going for a meal by the sea…just the two of us thanks to Grandad entertaining the little one. The restaurant we chose is very close to where we went for my聽Birthday Meal聽in St-Quay-Portrieux. I didn’t take any skirts or dresses with me so that narrowed down the outfit choices to jeans or trousers. On a typical beach holiday where I’m either by the pool or lounging by the sea all day I take mostly skirts and dresses, but Brittany isn’t really like that, at least in my experience, so I feel more comfortable in trousers or shorts.

…my aim is to wear at least 80% of the clothes and shoes I pack when I go away.

I toyed with the idea of wearing jeans again but I’d packed these Asos culottes at the last minute and didn’t want to take them home unworn – my aim is to wear at least 80% of the clothes and shoes I pack when I go away. I applied the same logic to聽footwear: I could have worn my Stan Smiths with this outfit but I wanted a change from trainers and flip flops, and these gold espadrilles are very comfortable. My only gripe with the culottes is that they crease very easily and they are a nightmare to iron, at least if you’re like me and hate ironing (and are also very bad at it). While they score highly on the comfort level they are not the best to take on holiday.

I was extremely grateful for my poncho聽that evening, snuggling underneath it against the cool evening breeze.

We’d been very lucky with the weather聽but I knew as soon as the sun went down it was going to feel cool…which is why I took聽my beautiful grey cashmere poncho聽from Hope with me.聽You may remember when I went to the 3040 Blogger Meet in May聽we were all given a stunning pink poncho聽(I’m sure those of you who were there can’t forget!) and then I only went and won another one in the raflle! I was extremely grateful for my poncho聽that evening, snuggling underneath it against the cool evening breeze. I don’t think any holiday wardrobe should be without one of these!

Equipment silk Paris top Gap jeans Stan Smith trainers Zara jacket

We usually go on聽our Summer holiday聽to my Dad’s in Brittany during August, but this year we made the most of the school term ending early and went in聽July. This meant that聽the weather was much better and聽I got to spend my birthday there. To celebrate we had a family meal out at a lovely restaurant called La Passerelle in the seaside town of St-Quay-Portrieux. People dress casually in Brittany so I wore jeans and my new Adidas Stan Smith trainers聽in white and rose gold (a birthday present from my husband). My trusty Zara navy jacket goes everywhere with me because it’s聽perfect for聽pairing with jeans. It was quite a warm evening so I wore a silk Paris print top from Equipment.

I find it quite easy to pack for Brittany聽now and streamline my packing to a capsule of sensible footwear, jeans, t-shirts and a couple of jumpers.

I never bother taking heels on holiday any more because聽they’re just not practical. For this trip I just took FitFlops, a pair of low wedge espadrilles and my Stan Smith trainers. Confession time…I also took my running shoes聽but didn’t use them due to the heat and, ahem, copious amounts of wine. When in France and all that. I find it quite easy to pack for Brittany聽now and streamline my packing to a capsule of sensible footwear, jeans, t-shirts and a couple of jumpers. This time we were lucky enough to have beach weather so a couple of bikinis and a cover聽up went in the case too. If you follow me on Instagram you might have seen some of the beautiful beaches聽we went to. Due to the聽sun setting so late we were going later on in the afternoon and sunbathing until 8pm some days!

Scallops birthday meal at La Passerelle st Quay

Scallops are one of my favourite foods and luckily for me they are聽in plentiful supply in Brittany, so聽choosing what to order wasn’t difficult. The main course was delicious, as was the tarte au citron meringu茅e (basically lemon meringue tart) I had for dessert – complete with an indoor firework! Afterwards we took a stroll around the harbour, enjoying the late evening sun. Perfect.

Gap boyfriend jeans Zara jacketI’ve had a little break from blogging over the last couple of weeks, mainly due to spending a very relaxing 11 days in Brittany. The weather was a bit hit and miss..much like the UK, but we did manage to spend some time at the beach and do some exploring. Of course I had to pack a few Breton stripe tops and a classic navy jacket – I love the casual nautical fashion that’s so characteristic of this region of France…it’s so stylish and easy to wear.聽I may look the part but I don’t know the first thing about sailing!

Bonaparte beach archwayAs a bit of a history buff, I love to learn more about where I’m staying, and the north coast of Brittany has plenty to discover. Luckily, as my dad and step-mother live there we had our very own tour guides! Bonaparte beach played an important role in World War II and has been listed as one of France鈥檚 most important sites for Resistance activities. During eight separate operations from January to August 1944, 135 British, Canadian and American airmen and agents were secretly evacuated from this beach by boat to the UK. We saw the site of the safe house (which was destroyed by the Nazis) and the path along the cliffs where the airmen were led before sailing for British shores. It’s a beautiful beach, one I’d like to revisit, ideally in better weather – the heavens opened just as we were heading back to the car!

Chinti and Parker sweater and straw hatI’m blaming the terrain and fickle weather on this “eclectic” outfit: jeans and trainers because we were walking my daughter on a pony around the country lanes; a sunhat because it was, well, sunny (sometimes); and a jumper because when the sun disappeared it was chilly. All bases covered!
