Are you ready to sequin in the New Year with the Style Not Age collective?

Hello everyone! How are your preparations for New Year going? Are you ready to sequin in the New Year with the Style Not Age collective? We’re hosting a little party at home for friends; I still haven’t decided on what to wear yet, but this outfit is definitely in contention. It was my turn to choose the theme this month and it just had to be something sparkly.

I had numerous outfit options for this challenge – I’ve got four sequin skirts for starters. But I wanted something a bit more funky for New Year’s Eve, and it doesn’t get more disco than these sequin boots! I bought them in the River Island sale last Winter but haven’t worn them until now. Not content with one set of sparkles, I layered my sequin jacket over a plain black top. As I said in yesterday’s post, less is never more in my book!

I wore the jacket for a Christmas outfit three years ago, but with the more understated combination of boyfriend jeans and black heels. This time I felt like taking it up a notch by swapping blue denim for coated skinny jeans – the same ones I wore in Tuesday’s post.

While I’m not expecting it to be sunny on New Year’s Eve (certainly not after 3pm!) I added these silver glittery sunglasses for a bit of fun. They’re a bit too big and crazy for everyday wear, but I love having fun with accessories on the blog. Maybe I could get away with wearing them out with a plain black outfit. I’m betting my husband would make plenty of Dame Edna jokes though!

Sequins and Glitter | How to add a little sparkle to your festive outfit Oasis sequin skirt Matalan glitter clutch Carvela silver shoes

Nothing screams Christmas like sequins and glitter…not that I’m suggesting for one minute that you should confine them to the festive season! Sequin skirts must be very popular because I had to hunt high and low to find this one (which is now sold out but I’ve selected lots of alternatives at the bottom of the post). I haven’t been to any Christmas parties this year but maybe everyone is opting for a sequin skirt over the traditional LBD? As sequins and glitter are such a massive trend at the moment I thought I’d share my tips on how to add a little sparkle to your festive outfit…without going OTT!

A midi-length pencil skirt works well for my body shape and means I can wear it during the day too.

The key to wearing sequins without looking like you’ve fallen off the top of the Christmas tree is to wear them on either the top or bottom half. I chose a sequin jacket and jeans for last year’s outfit, for a sparkly but casual Christmas outfit. This year I really wanted a sequin pencil skirt in a midi length. There are a lot of sequin mini skirts and dresses out there but they are just not practical or flattering for me. A midi-length pencil skirt works well for my body shape and means I can wear it during the day too.

This Oasis skirt falls mid-calf on me, but it was sitting low on the waist because sadly it’s a bit too big. It’s a tube skirt so has no waistband, it’s just straight up and down. The weight of the sequins pulls it down so it doesn’t feel secure. It pains me greatly but I’ll have to send it back. This is a medium so I’ll know in future that Oasis sizing runs large. My husband helpfully suggested that I could polish off the tin of Quality Street guilt-free, but then I wouldn’t be able to fit into most of my existing wardrobe!

Accessories are a good way to buy into the trend if the thought of wearing sequins and glitter fills you with trepidation.

Because the skirt is quite a show-stopper I paired it with a black pussy bow top, which is basically a jumper pimped up to look like a blouse. I’ve had it years and wear it lots for work. I added a bit more glitter and shine with my silver Carvela shoes and the clutch bag I chose for my Matalan Blogger of the Month Feature. Accessories are a good way to buy into the trend if the thought of wearing sequins and glitter fills you with trepidation. If ever you needed an excuse to buy more shoes and bags this is it 😉

Although I couldn’t exchange this skirt for a smaller size I have managed to find a few suitable alternatives, including one very unusual one on eBay, so I’ll keep you posted!

What are you planning to wear for Christmas and New Year? Do you love sequins and glitter?

Strictly Come Dancing may be over for another year but if you’re already missing the showstopping outfits how about introducing a little festive sparkle into your wardrobe just in time for the party season? Think sequins, glitter and tassels…and not just for evening…you can work a little embellishment into your daytime outfit without looking over the top. One of the easiest ways to sparkle your way through Christmas Day without getting too dressed up is to wear a sequin jacket – you can throw it on over a plain top paired with jeans for a festive and comfortable look.

I’ve had this sequin jacket from Next in my wardrobe for years, unworn and with the tags still attached. It’s so easy to forget about items of clothing when you have every coat hanger layered to the max. The material is stretchy so it’s really comfortable to wear and the sequins aren’t too scratchy (one thing that can put me off wearing sequins). Boyfriend jeans keep the look casual, while the court shoes add a feminine touch. I found the sparkly ring in a charity shop…like a magpie I was drawn to it! It’s like my very own personal bauble!

Of course, if you’re going to hit the dance floor you need fabulous shoes that won’t leave you limping by the end of the night. JD Williams has put together a guide to choosing the perfect party footwear…whether you’re doing an energetic jive, graceful waltz or saucy salsa, you’ll find plenty of tips here. You can also find advice on how to dress like the stars of other TV shows, including Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife, as well as a range of party wear guaranteed to wow on the dance floor!

What do you plan to wear on Christmas Day? Will you be dressing up or keeping it casual? Whatever you’re doing I wish you a very Merry Christmas!
