Gingham Ruffles, Denim and Embroidered Shoes Zara gingham top Marks and Spencer embroidered mules Zara basket bag

You could say I’m fashionably late to the gingham party. In fact, if I’d left it any later everyone would have drunk up and gone home. My procrastinating came to an abrupt end when an email arrived informing me the Zara sale had started. Not only did I order this top, but also the matching skirt, this cute basket bag and several other items I decided I couldn’t live without.

I like the combination of gingham ruffles, denim and embroidered shoes, it brings together several trends in one outfit.

I’m not sure I want to wear the gingham top and skirt together – I think that would risk venturing into Little House on the Prairie territory. But then, when it comes to fashion I’ve learned to never say never to anything. I like the combination of gingham ruffles, denim and embroidered shoes, it brings together several trends in one outfit. Not that I’m a slave to trends, but I like to make them work for me without looking like a fashion victim. The top is quite short so it works better with high waisted trousers. For a dressier option you could swap the jeans for a pair of wide legged trousers in navy or white.

I can’t help thinking that this raffia bucket bag would make a perfect bird’s nest!

Raffia bags are really having a moment, but finding a good quality one that doesn’t cost silly money hasn’t been as easy as I’d expected. When I saw this bucket bag in the Zara sale it went straight into my shopping cart (it’s been reduced further since I bought it…typical!). It’s a good sturdy design with a top handle, as well as a long strap that can be removed. It’s lined with a striped fabric and has a snap fastenening strap over the lid to keep it shut. I can’t help thinking that this raffia bucket bag would make a perfect bird’s nest! Grab it while it’s going cheap (sorry, terrible joke!).

Are you embracing gingham, ruffles, embroidery and raffia bags? Which is your favourite? It’s link up day so scroll down and add your lovely outfits!

Jord Watch Review and Giveaway Frankie 35 Zebrawood & Champagne

I spend a great deal of my time clock watching; when I’m getting my daughter ready for school in the morning I’m frequently checking to see if we’re running late (we usually are). My job requires even more attention to the ticking of the clock – working in TV news means constantly working to deadlines. Wearing a beautiful and unique timepiece brings joy to the everyday routines that make up my day, so when Jord offered me one of their stunning wood watches to review I was delighted.

The watch has a very elegant gold face and an ultra slim case which feels incredibly comfortable to wear.

I’ve been a fan of Jord (pronounced Yoad) wood watches for ages, having seen them on other bloggers. I deliberated over which one to choose because they are all stunning, but eventually I decided on the Frankie 35 Zebrawood and Champagne. The watch has a very elegant gold face and an ultra slim case which feels incredibly comfortable to wear. It’s so light that I hardly notice I’m wearing it, and unlike metal straps, it doesn’t feel cold when I first put it on. I gave Jord my wrist measurement and the strap was adjusted prior to dispatch so that it fits perfectly.

The watches come in a beautiful wooden presentation box, along with a tube of finishing oil and polishing cloth to condition the wood.

Jord has a range of watches in different designs and types of wood for both men and women. They also offer an engraving service – perfect if you’re looking to buy a unique Mother’s Day gift, or maybe a birthday or anniversary present. The watches come in a beautiful wooden presentation box, along with a tube of finishing oil and polishing cloth to condition the wood.

For my outfit I took my cue from the gorgeous watch, which I teamed with a wooden necklace and Winkwood sunglasses. This chambray shirt is the perfect blank canvas to showcase a statement necklace (I wore it with a feather necklace for the 3040 blogger meet last year). There’s something about a knotted shirt and an A line midi skirt that looks so chic and a little bit retro. I’ve had this bird print skirt for years but I can’t remember ever wearing it before. It was quite breezy when we took these photos so I had to be careful not to have a Marilyn moment!

Finding the perfect pink coat

A couple of years ago I had my heart set on finding the perfect pink coat. When I say perfect, I mean that it had to be pale pink, a simple design and not expensive. Despite searching online and trawling eBay to the point of obsessiveness I could not fine “the one”. Eventually I got sidetracked and ended up buying a couple of fuschia pink coats – both very nice and fantastic bargains, but not precisely what I wanted. I broke one of my cardinal rules: I settled for a “nearly but not quite”. Well, two to be precise.

It just shows what amazing bargains you can stumble upon in charity shops. Finding the perfect pink coat took a while but it was definitely worth the wait!

Fast forward a couple of years and pale pink is suddenly the colour of the moment again – and I still wanted that coat I’d seen on Pinterest/magazines/fashion blogs. As fate would have it, I’d taken my watch to the jewellers to have the battery replaced and had some time to kill. On a whim I popped in to a nearby charity shop…and…ta-daa! To my delight, there was the exact coat I’d been looking for all this time. I tried it on and quickly snapped it up for the bargain price of £9.99. I took it straight to the dry cleaner’s and a couple of days later it was as good as new. It’s from Great Plains so it’s a good quality coat, and probably hardly worn. It just shows what amazing bargains you can stumble upon in charity shops. Finding the perfect pink coat took a while but it was definitely worth the wait!

Olive and khaki are also very popular shades this season and they happen to pair well with pale pink.

For its first appearance on the blog (and I’m sure there’ll be many others) I’m keeping it casual with boyfriend jeans and a silk top from All Saints. Olive and khaki are also very popular shades this season and they happen to pair well with pale pink. To create a contrast to the relaxed fit of the jeans and top I chose these pretty pink block heel shoes with bead embellishment and a bird print chain handle bag that I bought in Abu Dhabi. To finish the look I’m wearing my fab Autumn Tale Winkwood sunglasses and beaded jewellery that I made myself.

Have you ever waited a long time to find the perfect coat, or any other item of clothing? Let me know in the comments and don’t forget to link up what you’re wearing this week!

A Day in Dubai - Going Up the Burj Khalifa

During our recent trip to Abu Dhabi which I featured in my previous post, we took a day trip to Dubai. By car, it only takes about 45 minutes from Abu Dhabi to the outskirts of Dubai, and taxis are relatively cheap. We paid about £30 to go to the Ibn Battuta mall where we picked up the metro to Dubai mall. Of course, when you only have a day in Dubai, going up the Burj Khalifa is high on the list of things to do (pun intended!).

The Burj Khalifa isn’t just a tourist attraction though; the tower also contains a restaurant, Armani Hotel, corporate suites and 900 residences.

Standing at over 828 metres the Burj Khalifa is the world’s tallest building. It also holds several other records including the building with the highest number of stories, highest outdoor observation deck and tallest service elevator in the world. The Burj Khalifa isn’t just a tourist attraction though; the tower also contains a restaurant, Armani Hotel, corporate suites and 900 residences. The lucky inhabitants of this exclusive building have access to state-of-the-art fitness facilities, indoor/outdoor swimming pools, jacuzzis and a recreation room for gatherings and events. I dread to think how much an apartment here would cost!

Ticket prices vary depending on what time of day you want to go and whether you go to level 125 or 148.

The entrance to the tower is conveniently located in the mall – which is an attraction in itself..so many shops! It’s recommended that you buy tickets to At The Top in advance, especially at weekends. Ticket prices vary depending on what time of day you want to go and whether you go to level 125 or 148. The premium tickets cost 500 AED (about £110) per person so it’s quite expensive for a family trip. I imagine seeing the sun set over Dubai from the Burj Khalifa is quite a sight, hence the hefty price tag. We went to level 125 at the latter end of off-peak time to keep costs down. It was a bit hazy but still a magnificent view.

If you love shopping then Dubai Mall is retail heaven. The sheer scale of it is unlike any other mall I’ve been to. As we were there on a strictly sight-seeing trip I didn’t punish my credit card, but with more time and money at my disposal I could’ve really gone mad. When we first arrived we grabbed a quick snack at the food court and meandered over to the aquarium.

What did seem to take forever was the glass bottom boat trip. If you ever go to Dubai Aquarium, take my advice and skip this part.

Again, we’d bought tickets in advance, which saves loads of time. What did seem to take forever was the glass bottom boat trip. If you ever go to Dubai Aquarium, take my advice and skip this part. It took about an hour of tedious queuing to actually get on a small boat for all of ten minutes, in what’s basically a pool crammed full of fish. By the time we got off we had to sprint over to the Burj Khalifa so we didn’t miss our slot. Luckily, as we were leaving we were told to keep our tickets so we could go back later and finish the tour of the aquarium. I’m glad we did because it’s home to lots of creatures, big and small. My favourite was the little desert hedgehog, although the pair of saltwater crocodiles was quite an arresting sight!

Generally, ladies should keep shoulders and knees covered and avoid very tight or low cut tops.

I mentioned dress codes in my last post and how I’d been unsure of what to take with me. While Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the most liberal of the emirates, visitors are asked to dress “respectfully” in shopping malls. Generally, ladies should keep shoulders and knees covered and avoid very tight or low cut tops. It has been known for Emirati ladies to tell Western tourists to cover up (and arguing could land you in trouble). That said, it felt a lot more liberal than I anticipated, but I’d rather err on the side of caution.

Strolling in the early evening sunshine made me think how lovely it would be to spend longer than just a day in Dubai. I should probably start saving now, especially if I want to stay in the 7-star Burj Al Arab hotel!  We popped into the souk for ice cream before heading back to Abu Dhabi. It was a great day and I’m already looking forward to next time 🙂

Winkwood Sunglasses bolongaro-trevor-dress

Happy Tuesday everyone! It’s the last day of February so Spring really is upon us now, which means (hopefully) lots more sunshine. To welcome the new season I’m running a fabulous giveaway for a pair of Winkwood sunglasses.

Winkwood is a Melbourne brand that designs beautiful and unusual shades. The sunglasses are made using a number of different materials that are resistant to standard wear and tear, maintain colours for longer, and they float in water. They are very light and so comfortable to wear. All of the lenses are tested to reflect or filter out 99% of UVA and UVB light. They also come in a beautiful wooden case. It was so difficult to choose a design to review because they are all so striking, but eventually I opted for Autumn Tale.

In a sea of big designer name sunglasses it’s both refreshing and gratifying to wear something no-one else is.

I’m rarely without a pair of sunglasses because my eyes are very sensitive to bright light, and over the years I’ve built up a nice little collection. As well as the classic styles I also love unusual eyewear, but often that means compromising on comfort. Not so with these Winkwood shades; they are the most comfortable pair I own. I took them on holiday to the UAE last week and I almost forgot I was wearing them they are so light! Dubai looked even more splendid viewed through these mirrored lenses. In a sea of big designer name sunglasses it’s both refreshing and gratifying to wear something no-one else is.

Even though it wasn’t really the weather for short sleeves I wanted to wear this dress because it goes so well with the sunglasses.

We took these photos before I went on holiday and it was very cold…you can probably tell from the goose bumps on my arms! Even though it wasn’t really the weather for short sleeves I wanted to wear this dress because it goes so well with the sunglasses. I’ve had it years but have only worn it once. I don’t usually wear above the knee skirts or dresses without tights so it probably wasn’t the most sensible purchase but the print hooked me. Finally, I got around to buying tights in colours other than black and brown (why did it it take me so long?) so I can finally get some wear out it.

I chose a pair of navy ankle boots for a leg-lengthening effect and an orange bag to pick up on the orange in the dress. A pink bag would work equally well…maybe I’ll try that next time!

So if you fancy a new pair of shades you really must enter this Winkwood sunglasses giveaway! Don’t worry if you don’t win because you can bag a 30% discount with the code STYLESPLASH.
Good luck, happy shopping…and of course don’t forget to link up your outfit posts 🙂
