I've been using Lancome's Teint Idole Ultra foundation for a number of years and for me it struck just the right balance of long-lasting coverage without being too heavy or thick. I have to admit that when I recently went to the Lancome counter to repurchase it I was in a hurry and picked up the newer version without giving it too much thought. I was completely unaware that it had been discontinued and assumed that what I was buying was just an improved version. However, the moment I first put it on it was obvious that it was a very different formula. Whereas the original was a light fluid consistency that was easy to blend, the new version is thick and gloopy which is difficult to apply without looking cakey. It really highlights any dry patches and is much too heavy for the delicate under-eye area. The only improvement is that the SPF is increased from 10 to 15, but one of the things I liked best about the original was its oil-free formula, making it a great all-weather foundation – even on beach holidays. The texture was fluid enough to layer over a high factor sunscreen without overloading the skin.
It's a shame Lancome couldn't have offered this new product alongside the original foundation as they are very different. I think it's fair to say that if you liked the old version you will almost certainly not like the new one. I won't be buying it again and I'm now working my way through samples of other products. So far I've tried Clarins Everlasting SPF 15 foundation which claims up to 15 hours of coverage. I'm also testing Max Factor Ageless Elixir 2-in-1 Foundation + Serum. Both are light, silky and blend easily – much like the old Teint Idole Ultra. Next on my list to try is Lancome's Teint Idole Silky Mat which claims up to 18 hours shine-free refined pores with SPF 15, but it's only available in three shades. It's really annoying when something you've been using for years is discontinued and you have the hassle of finding a suitable replacement. But it does have its benefits I suppose. It prompts you to try lots of new products…and you never know…you may just discover something even better.
