I’ve never been a morning person, so a swift intake of caffeine first thing is a necessity for me. As well as my morning coffee, I drink several cups of tea throughout the day. But there’s a downside to my caffeine habit: teeth staining. Over the years I’ve tried several teeth whitening methods, from toothpastes to laser treatment, but none have been terribly successful. After the laser teeth whitening session I was told to avoid tea, coffee, cola and all dark foods for 48 hours. After 24 hours I had such awful caffeine withdrawal symptoms that I felt like I had flu. I even considered drinking tea through a straw, such was my desperation!
When Smile Brilliant offered me the chance to try their custom teeth whitening system I didn’t hesitate to say yes. The whole process is really easy and it’s a convenient and affordable method of teeth whitening for coffee addicts like me! Smile Brilliant provide you with all the materials to make your impressions, as well as a padded envelope to send them off to the lab. A couple of weeks later your custom made teeth whitening trays arrive and it’s time to start working on that smile! (Shipping took a bit longer for me as I’m in the UK and Smile Brilliant is in the USA).
Making your impressions is very easy and doesn’t take long. You mix one tub of blue base paste with one tub of white catalyst paste together until the colour is even, then distribute it evenly onto one of the trays. You bite down on it, making sure not to wiggle as that will result in a loose-fitting impression. After two and half minutes, remove and repeat for the other set (there’s an extra tub of both pastes in case you make a mistake). The whole process of making the impressions takes around fifteen minutes. Afterwards, they need to be left to set and harden for 30 minutes, then rinse with cool water and they’re ready to go to the lab.
Smile Brilliant kept me updated on the status of my impressions, letting me know when they’d received them, and when the trays had been dispatched. The syringes of whitening and desensitizing gels are included in the kit so once the trays arrive you’re good to go. Even if you don’t have particularly sensitive teeth, it’s still a good idea to use the desensitizing gel after whitening. The gel is infused with fluoride to nourish the teeth, promote rehydration and prevent further stains.
Smile Brilliant recommend whitening for between 45 minutes and three hours, followed by 20 minutes of the desensitizing gel. You need to avoid eating and drinking for half an hour after each session so it’s probably best to do it in the evening. Whitening before bedtime also has the added benefit of preventing late night snacking, so it’s a win win situation! The trays are quite thin and flexible so they are comfortable and not really noticeable. If you did want to whiten during the day it wouldn’t be obvious to others – I wore mine on the school run once and didn’t feel self-conscious.
I did experience some sensitivity despite using the gel, so I didn’t whiten on consecutive days. This prolonged the whole process but I just had to be patient. On one occasion I overfilled the trays and the whitening gel spilled out onto my gum which caused some irritation. I had to wait and let my gum heal for a few days after that, but it was just a small setback. The kit comes with detailed instructions, but if you have any specific concerns there’s a comprehensive FAQs section on the website. You can also chat online to a team member so you’re fully supported at every step of the process.
I saw a difference from the first whitening session, which was very encouraging. Immediately after a session I had white spots on some of my teeth, particularly at the sides. These quickly evened out to leave my teeth brighter and whiter all over. The benefits of having custom fitted whitening trays is that the gel reaches all parts of the teeth, plus you can whiten whenever and wherever you choose.
I’m really pleased with the result – I think it’s a subtle but noticeable difference. I feel much more confident about smiling now because I was getting a little self-conscious about the coffee and tea stains. Just taking your teeth a few shades lighter can make a big difference and has quite a youthful effect. Plus, I can top up at any time now that I have my custom fitted trays by ordering more syringes of gel. The kits range in price from $139-$179 for the sensitive teeth system depending on whether you require 3, 6 or 9 syringes. The testimonials section features some impressive before and after photos from customers, and it helpfully lists which system they used as well as what type of staining they had.

You are lucky to have such good teeth! Even the before photo they look good. I am terrified of the dentist and I have suffered for that. I would also be one of the first to jump on this treatment if it weren’t for my allergies! You can definitely see a difference. Beautiful smile! 🙂

Thanks Laurie! My parents both have straight teeth so I guess I can thank them for my gnashers. Neither have small noses though…ah well, you can’t win ’em all!
This is great!
