Experimentation is the best way to find your internal fashionista. Forget rigid wardrobes and societal conformity — push that boat out.
Of course, that’s often easier said than done. Life sometimes gets in the way, and the risk-averse might feel it’s a financial (or confidence) gamble to suddenly embrace a whole new look. With this in mind, embracing day-to-day adjustments is the simplest way to start. Think small-scale experiments, like accessories or singular outfit components, like trousers. Here are five strategies to try first.

It’s incredible what an accessory can do. It might be a scarf, a necklace, a beanie, or a belt – whatever you choose, step back and admire the transformation. Refreshing your accessories rotation is a brilliant place to start when experimenting with style. Often, these accessories are budget-friendly and great value for money (think of how versatile a simple black belt is). It’s low commitment but yields good results.

Did you hear that patterns are in? People are rethinking their relationships with trousers. Swap those faded jeans for leg-elongating and flattering alternatives. Plaid prints are amidst the trouser styles set to soar in 2025. Or, if the bold prints aren’t your style, you might experiment with fits. Just a heads up: straight-leg, skinny, and high-waisted but baggy fits are officially “in.”

Your shape might well be your most stylish asset. Embrace it with figure-hugging accessories like a skinny belt placed over a plain top, dress, or shirt for a high-contrast silhouette. Waist cinchers or decorative waspies are another option for a vintage flair and more dramatic results.

Everyone has noticed the Western obsession. Cowboy boots, hats, and denim have been ricocheting across trending social media content. Beyonce’s UK tour is partly to thank for that, but we’ve also seen an injection of country music and equestrian culture into global interest. Bella Hadid’s rodeo appearances went viral, providing that fashion and Western culture go hand-in-hand. What could you add to your wardrobe?

Sometimes, you need a refreshed vision — not a new wardrobe. Project 333 is a good example of mini capsule challenges. The three-month rule stipulates that you can only wear 33 pieces of clothing, which forces you to creatively remix outfits. The benefits include reduced decision fatigue and a renewed sense of daily style.
Even if you don’t opt for a capsule challenge, it’s worth investing in a versatile wardrobe. Start brainstorming how to pair pieces together. Don’t just buy individual items.
Start simple when experimenting with day-to-day style. The changes don’t need to be extravagant to yield significant results.
Thanks for all these tips, Emma! I have definitely been experimenting more with belts since my waistline has reappeared. I am just not any good at capsule wardrobes, though. They are so confusing to me when I know they should be very simple!

Great tips! I don’t experience that much as I tend to hold on to sets I really love. Well, and my closet is not that adventurous as yours!
Great tips!
