Welcome to The Thrifty Six. In case you are new here, we are a group of international fashion influencers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we all share an outfit based on a theme that features preloved pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops, as well as online resale sites. The Thrifty Six are here to inspire you to shop second hand!
If you aren’t new here, you may have noticed that we have a new member! We are delighted to welcome Sally of Within a World of My Own to the group. After four years, Grace has decided to leave due to her busy schedule. She is still blogging though and you can follow her at Graceful Rags.
But onto this month’s theme of silk, which was chosen by Jane. I only have a few silk tops, all bought years ago. I stopped buying silk when I found out how it’s produced (this article explains all) but I still occasionally wear the second hand pieces I already own. Of course, cheap manmade fabrics are bad for the environment too. Everyone has to weigh up the pros and cons and make that decision for themselves. Choosing preloved silk is a compromise, and of course it’s better for your bank balance too!
Actually, for years I didn’t like the feeling of silk; I thought it felt cold to the skin. But as I got older I started to enjoy wearing it in hot weather. Due to its cooling properties and thin and lightweight texture, silk clothing is great for taking on holiday. It takes up hardly any room in your case and rolling it up tightly helps prevent creasing.
I’ve never been able to tell if this top is black or navy and red. I tried it with both a black and navy bag, but to my eye, the black seemed to “pop” more. While searching for similar items to link, I discovered two tops exactly like this one on eBay and they are described as navy (they’re in the widget below). So I guess that settles that! If I wear it with navy trousers or jeans I’ll switch the black bag for a red one. I finished the outfit with gold jewellery and Fitflops. I’m obsessed with chunky gold earrings and these are the latest addition to my growing collection!

“In a world of polyester, always look for silk…
Silk is quality, elegance and style, it glides over the body with grace…
…natural, smooth and tactile, it complements colour and elevates cut.
These voluminous pure silk pants have metres of drapage, the construction is exquisite.
The raw silk top compliments the style adding a playful ‘genie of the lamp’ vibe…
Silk is my summer love, so sensual and sublime!”
“One of my friends recently gave me a bunch of clothes to give to good homes, and I decided to keep this silk blouse even though it’s larger than my normal size. I’m in love with the color of it and tying it at the waist creates a perfect proportion. I held the ends together with a scarf clip and decorated the middle with a clip-on earring. The base layer is this mustard-colored dress from Your Revolving Closet which is a sustainable/thrifty way to have new clothes at your fingertips.”
“I am wearing a lipstick print blouse! Fits with your blazer Emma! This blouse is from the brand I used to work for and bought on Vinted. I love the contrasts of the tie with the silk blouse and the soft fabric with the leather skirt. I don’t think I ever wore the blouse with jeans, I think that would look great too. Silk works best, for me, worn with a thicker fabric. I picked the skirt back from the giveaway pile. Could not let it go, I should wear it more often.”
“My favorite silk items to thrift are scarves: they are timeless, one-size-fits-all, and usually in very good condition. This Art Deco silk scarf was a nice pairing with another thrifted silk piece, the Talbots gold-camel lined silk skirt. For my first foray with the Thrifty Six, I wore an outfit with all secondhand items, including hand-me-down pearl stud earrings from my mom that are several decades old.”
“I didn’t have much in preloved silk except for a scarf or two. So I went on a quick thrifting adventure and found this 100% silk tie for $1.00. I was going to just buy the tie and find something in my closet to wear with it but I spotted this satin slip skirt on my way to the register and it really caught my attention. I saw it was my size, so I grabbed it on a whim, paid $6.00 for it, and have already styled two outfits around it. Although it is not silk (it is a polyester satin), it has a silky feel and I really loved it with the necktie. I added a preloved white cotton blazer because it is still a bit chilly here. Our spring weather tends to arrive with the summer solstice!”

This is such a cool top, Emma! I do love the feeling of silk now that I’m older. I was always worried about ruining silk whenever I had the rare piece back in the day. I have a couple of items I can’t tell if they’re black or navy, either!

Thanks Marsha! It does help with perimenopausal hot flushes!
I honestly have to say that I never dived into how silk is made. Nevertheless, its a beautiful blouse! And as a lover of golden jewellery, the earrings are fabulous!
Thanks Nancy! I didn’t know anything about silk until I saw a series Joanna Lumley did about the ancient silk road. It was really interesting.
Emma, what a fabulous look! I love this striking red outfit on you. The blouse is really fun and your red pants are just wonderful! I love the gold accessories, too. You look amazing as always, my friend!

“Love your outfit choices! The chunky gold earrings are stunning and really elevate the look. It’s interesting how lighting can affect how we perceive colors, but pairing the top with navy sounds perfect. And switching bags to match your outfit is a great tip!”
Thanks Steve!
Great look Emma, I love these trousers.
Thank you Claire!
