Match Made in Seven: Punk, Sex Pistols T-shirt

Welcome to the monthly edition of Match Made in Seven! We are a international group of fashion bloggers who meet once a month. One of us chooses a theme in turn, and that can be anything. A book, music, a color, a movie. And then we style an outfit based on that theme. The theme of this month is chosen by Nancy and is: punk. Also take a look at the other bloggers how they have interpreted the theme this month.

As a rock chick I thought a punk-inspired look would be a breeze, but it wasn’t as easy as I’d anticipated!

When Nancy emailed to say she’d chosen punk as the group’s first theme I was really pleased. As a rock chick I thought a punk-inspired look would be a breeze, but it wasn’t as easy as I’d anticipated! My initial thought was to add some tartan into my outfit, but I don’t have much of it in my wardrobe. I tried to find a mini skirt so that I could wear it with tights and these biker boots, but tartan skirts are really hard to find, especially in traditional red tartan.

A few months ago I almost bought a tartan bomber jacket on eBay but someone beat me to it (I hate it when that happens!). So instead I settled for a tailored jacket that wasn’t quite what I’d hoped for in terms of fabric quality and fit.

A Sex Pistols T-shirt was included on that list of what not to wear, and being a die-hard rebel, I immediately bought one.

I had a look in some charity shops for a skirt, but to no avail, so I had to rethink my outfit. I cast my mind back to the late 70s for some inspiration. Although I was only a child then, my brother is 11 years older than me and was a big Sex Pistols fan, so the music and fashion of that time made quite an impact on me. He had a Never Mind the B@ll@cks T-shirt back then, in fact it wouldn’t surprise me if he still has it now!

But I bought mine more recently. My prompt was an article telling women what they shouldn’t wear over the age of 40, and it was quite an extensive list. A Sex Pistols T-shirt was included on that list of what not to wear, and being a die-hard rebel, I immediately bought one. Tell me I can’t do something and I’ll do it twice just to prove a point! So two and half years after it’s debut on the blog, it was time for another outing.

This time I teamed it with an old leather skirt and my new faux leather biker boots. They are definitely the most practical footwear for the snowy weather, but they are very squeaky! I hope that fades when I’ve worn them in because you can hear me coming down the corridor at work in them! Not that I’d wear this outfit to work; I probably could without anyone batting an eyelid because pretty much anything goes, but best not to on the days I’m working in children’s TV!

The Modalu satchel was a total bargain – I paid about £15 for it on eBay…and it was new!

To toughen up the look I added more studs and spikes. My Merle O’Grady ring is one of my favourite pieces of jewellery. I coveted it for a long time before it went on sale and I snapped it up. I do have to be careful when I’m wearing it though…it could be used as a weapon! Maybe that’s why I like it 😉 The Modalu satchel was a total bargain – I paid about £15 for it on eBay…and it was new!

  6. That ring! Surely there’s a law against that, haha. Love the T shirt. What, no hat. You must like your hair at the moment, which does look lovely by the way. Great look Emma

What a fabulous idea, I’ll look forward to seeing you and the others each month. I was never into punk, more of a ‘new romantic’ myself. Love the skirt too, I was looking at one in F & F today, didn’t have my size and I wasn’t really sure of the colour it was tan! Thanks for sharing today. Happy Thursday. Jacqui Mummabstylish

Ok, Emma, I think you nailed the punk look! The tee-shirt is great, and the boots and that bag closed the deal! Lol! Like you, I think any list of rules for fashion over 40 requires one to break them!

Unlike you, punk was a bit of a challenge for me! I look like a biker on the street! Haha! Oh, well. It’s going to be lots of fun with you ladies!

    Happy weekend,
    xx Darlene
