You know that saying “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”? Well I prefer to turn them into an outfit! The proverbial phrase is all about optimism in the face of adversity, although I’m not sure why lemons are considered unlucky. We were certainly unfortunate with the weather over the weekend.
You may have seen some photos and video over on my Instagram stories from our town’s annual FAB festival. It’s a rather ecclectic mix of live music, boating and performances by local community groups. This year Isobel took part in the street parade, and her drama group performed some songs. They did the same performance twice in different locations, but just as the second one started the heavens opened. And boy did it rain! It thundered and lightened too. Within minutes the canopy the children were under was in danger of buckling under the weight of the water and us parents were soaked.
The water ran down from the main road forming a river towards the canal, making it impossible for us to escape until the rain subsided. Luckily the little stage was in front of a double decker bus (the “Busking Bus”) so the kids sheltered inside, but the rest of us huddled under the canopy on the very small stage area like sardines. The singing was abandoned and Isobel never did get another shot at her solo. Oh the joys of a British Summer! We had to seek refuge in the pub…every cloud and all that 😉
When we shot these photos it was the first time I’d seen the sun in days. Not the best light for a photo shoot, but I certainly wasn’t complaining. The sunlight catches the glittery lemon bag and makes makes it sparkle. I love Skinny Dip’s quirky designs and have quite a few of their novelty bags (including the rainbow clutch featured in last week’s post). It makes the perfect partner for this Hell Bunny shirt that I bought last year. I like how it incorporates fruit and flowers in the pattern for a fun Summery print. I’ve paired it with a Ted Baker pencil skirt that I picked up in a charity shop for £2.99. The split at the front is a bit high for my liking but I will probably wear it more in Winter with tights.
I added more yellow wth some big tassel earrings, Les Nereides chunky bracelet and patent shoes. The funky cat eye sunglasses give a fun and slightly retro touch to the look 🙂

I love those kind of bags, they are so funny. But what a sad experience for your daughter. It hasn’t been the best spring has it.
Isobel wasn’t that bothered really, but Pete had to miss the first performance so he didn’t get to see her sing. I’m glad I filmed it! By the end of the day she was covered in mud and glitter!
Oh, the rain this weekend Emma!!!! Thank goodness for British pubs, eh 😉
What an absolutely glorious outfit – the lemons print! The lemon bag!! It’s elegant and fun all at the same time.
Thanks so much for hosting – I know it’s my first time linking up but I’ve been trying to get my workload in order so that I have more time for link ups…!

Thanks so much Catherine! I know exactly what you mean about workload – there just aren’t enough hours in the day! I’ve slacked on joining in link ups lately, but have been trying to clear the decks so I can get back to doing the blog rounds. Lovely to see you at the link up 🙂
This whole outfit is super cute! I love the lemon print and pops of yellow!

Thanks so much Heather!
What a great post! The lemon bag and top are SOOO cute and the yellow shoes are perfect. (Can you tell I love yellow!? Haha!) OK, so I should be prepared for rain during our mid-July British Isles cruise, right? You’ll have to keep me posted as I never trust the weathermen’s predictions!
xx Darlene
Thanks Darlene! Always be prepared for rain in the UK!
That jacket and bag are too much fun!! I just adore this fabulous look!
Thank you Laura!
That bag is super cute, Emma! And I just love how you styled it with the lemon blouse and yellow heels.
What a shame about the heavy rainstorm you had – but at least your daughter got to perform once!
Hugs
Suzy xx
Thanks Suzy! Yes it was a shame, especially for the parents – the kids got to shelter in a double decker bus! I’m just glad I had my rain poncho with me!
Your little lemon print top is so cute! I think you styled it perfectly with those added pops of yellow!
