It may not be cool to admit it in today’s politically correct culture, but I’m a huge fan of Carry On films. I love the innuendos and slapstick humour, so when I saw this British Retro saucy postcard dress on sale I had to have it. I bought it during the depths of Winter and have been itching to wear it ever since.
The fabric is a lightweight cotton, so it will keep me cool on hot days. It would be ideal for taking on holiday as it would take up hardly any room in a case. Falling just below the knee, the length is just right for me. The V neck is deep enough to avoid looking boxy, while the collar helps to create an elongating effect. I like that it has a belt in matching fabric to cinch in the waist. Just one small gripe…I really wish it had pockets, then it would be perfect.
As the dress makes quite a statement I kept my accessories fairly simple with some retro style sunglasses, red bag and shoes. For jewellery, I added a chunky stretch bracelet, enamel ring and my Paris necklace (just to add a little diversity to the very British theme!). I blinged up the plain suede court shoes with some clips I bought on eBay. Shoe clips are such an easy way to embellish a pair of plain mules or court shoes – a trick I picked up from Joi and Cherie.
British Retro is a relatively new company, specialising in vintage style clothing. All of the garments are made in one of the oldest established factories in the East End of London. With a passion for utilising local industry, the company also sources the fabrics and trimmings from the UK. British Retro only produces small quantities of each design, so there’s little chance of bumping into someone else wearing the same dress. Sadly, it also means that this dress is no longer available, but there are plenty of other stunning designs to choose from.
If you really want to make a statement, British Retro have full skirt petticoats in a rainbow of colours to wear under a swing dress. There’s also a range of stunning, figure-hugging pencil dresses in the most amazing prints. I quite fancy this ‘Seize the Night’ pencil dress. I’ve got a wedding to go to next month so I might treat myself 😉

Thanks Sierra. It’s been a sad day, and so close to home. Just so sad and senseless.
So FUN Emma! I love it and I am a big fan of slapstick humour! I would be having to read through the dress before I put it on! Love it and so colorful. I have heard of the clips and think its a great idea for shoes, do they bug your toes at all? The whole outfit is so pretty and springy! Love the skull dress too.
Have a great week!

Thanks Jess! Yes I can imagine people trying to read my dress while I’m queueing for my coffee! Surprisingly the clips don’t bug my toes at all – they’re just like clip on earrings. I’ve got my eye on a few more pairs 🙂
I also love comics and this comics dress is awesome. I am very temped. LOL.
That dress is absolutely adorable! I love the how the shoes match perfectly! Peace!

I know it’s not an actual vintage dress but it has that great look of one. Your use of red and blue with it is perfect. I didn’t know you had a link-up. I’m glad I stopped by and will be back.
What a quirky dress. This print is so unique

OMG that dress is brilliant! I love the fashion from by-gone eras like the 40s and 50s and the idea of dresses with petticoats make me smile. I wish people today dressed the way they did back in the old days!

i must admit i am not really a dress person, but having an hourglass figure and being curvy, Im often told I should show it off more. I love seeing women in vintage clothing, its so stylish. This caught my eye as I love anything a bit quirky, and i used to love Carry on too. I will definitely be checking out British Retro to give something like this a go. Really lovely post!
