Casual Red, White and Blue Outfit for a Day at Jodrell Bank

For days out that involve a lot of walking, boyfriend jeans and classic white tennis shoes is my go-to combination. I wore this casual red, white and blue outfit for a day out at Jodrell Bank over the Easter holidays. It’s only a 20 minute car journey from where we live and it’s a great day out for kids. It was quite cool when we first arrived so I was glad I’d taken a scarf, but later when the sun came out it was really warm…typically changeable Spring weather!

Another item I’m wearing on repeat lately is the striped jumper I chose for Bonmarché’s denim guide outfit.

This red coat is a nice relaxed fit that’s perfect for wearing with jeans and smart trainers. I’ve worn it a couple of times before on the blog with a smarter work outfit (here and here) a couple of years ago when I first bought it, but until recently it hadn’t had much wear. Now I’m wearing it almost daily because it’s such a comfortable, lightweight coat and goes with so much in my wardrobe. Another item I’m wearing on repeat lately is the striped jumper I chose for Bonmarché’s denim guide outfit. It’s a lightweight, soft, cotton blend sweater that feels incredibly comfortable on. Combining stripes and floral embroidery, it’s perfect teamed with jeans and white tennis shoes for off duty chic.

The Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre gardens is about 35 acres and contains over 3000 trees and shrubs. There’s an outdoor play area, picnic benches and a path for taking a leisurely stroll. We started off in the Planet Pavillion exploring the clockwork orrery – a mechanical model of the solar system that demonstrates the relative positions and motions of the planets. Children (and adults) love turning the handle to make the planets move.

Jodrell Bank is probably most known for the Lovell Telescope – one of the biggest and most powerful radio telescopes in the world. The whole structure rotates on circular railway tracks, while the bowl, which is supported on either side by two towers, can be tilted at any angle from the horizon to the zenith. It’s visible for miles and is a familiar feature of the Cheshire landscape.

Learning about terms such as “event horizon” and “escape velocity” was an education for me as well as the kids!

As it was the school holidays there were various activities throughout the day, including a presentation on black holes. All of the children got front row seats in a mini theatre and took part in some fun demonstrations. It may have been aimed at kids but I thought it was really interesting. Learning about terms such as “event horizon” and “escape velocity” was an education for me as well as the kids! I don’t about you, but I find it so hard to comprehend some of the concepts involved in cosmology and astrophysics, so a child-friendly explanation suits me just fine!

I hope you enjoy the long Bank Holiday weekend…fingers crossed for the weather! Don’t forget to pop back on Tuesday for the link up!
