It was my turn to choose a theme for this month’s Thrifty Six post and I wanted it to be joyful; the reason being that January is such a dreary month. It just so happens that today is what’s known as “Blue Monday” – supposedly the most miserable day of the year. I wrote a post about it four years ago with tips on how to survive it. I’m making a real effort to take my own advice because every year I think I’m getting through it ok, only for something to knock me off kilter. Maybe it has become a habit and I’m looking for things, or perhaps it’s just an inevitable slump after the Christmas festivities. Whatever the cause, me and January just don’t get on. In a bid to combat that, I wanted to bring some joy to January in the form of colourful outfits. Let’s brighten up January and prove it can be fun!
You may recall when I wore the poppy print shirt with red trousers a couple of weeks ago that I said I’d like to try it with turquoise trousers. Well, since then I’ve been really drawn to teal and turquoise. Maybe it was that styling idea that put this particular bee in my bonnet. Or perhaps it had seeped into my subconscious scrolling Instagram and Pinterest. The latter seems plausible given that shades of blue feature in all our outfits. Whatever the prompt, I knew I wanted some turquoise trousers and luckily I found these from River Island on eBay. They are shorter than I expected (I had to check I hadn’t bought petite by mistake!) and they’re a little loose on the waist and crotch. But I like the cropped flare fit, which is perfect for showing off brightly-coloured footwear.
The yellow accents in this outfit all came from the shirt. It’s hard to see from a distance, but the gorgeous Forget-Me-Not print has little yellow flowers in it. I wanted to pick up on those and create a contrast with the blue tones. I’d had my eye on this teal fedora in the Moda in Pelle sale and I just knew it would be perfect for this outfit. I love how it looks with the yellow earrings and ombre aviator shades. I definitely needed a jacket and navy was the obvious choice. Pom Amsterdam jackets are just exquisite with the most beautiful details. Navy grounds the outfit and compliments the darker blues in the print of the shirt. How fortuitous that it happens to have yellow cuffs too!

“When Emma said brighten up January, I went full on bright color blocking because it is so gray and dreary here. This preloved pink shirt dress was just handed down to me from my neighbor because it didn’t fit her anymore. This amazing scarf was borrowed stolen from my son. My neon Zara sweater, orange button down shirt, and green heart necklace were all thrifted. I felt like a box of 1980’s neon crayons and it made me so happy!”
“You all know I am not the most colorful person, on the outside that is lol, but this sweater feels really colorful to me. I love a dark floral print. With a bit of glitter too. I bought recently three pre loved sweaters and tis is my favorite one. I couldn’t resist wearing it with a also pre loved black maxi skirt . But I choose colorful ankle boots too!”
“I’ve inherited this scarf years ago (the 80’s to be exact)…and all I did was wear it a few times. Why? Well for one thing, when you start wearing white in Canada, it’s basically no longer time for scarves- because it means we are straight into heat wave season. But not here in Southern Florida, where January makes it oh-so-perfect to wear! I love blue and white…oh so bright! Unless of course, January in Florida is too early for white?!”
“What better way to brighten up January than a turquoise faux fur coat?! I am currently studying abroad in Scotland, so I took this month’s thrifty collaboration as the perfect opportunity to go to my first charity shop last week. This fun jewel-toned jacket was the perfect find and only 12 pounds! It reminds me of something Keely from the show ‘Ted Lasso’ would wear.”
“Blue and green should never be seen?!?…An old saying without any real reason? I bring you electric blue accessorised with turquoise, aqua and forest green…is it so terrible? I feel like an angel in azure when I wear this striking evening dress…It’s a feast for the eye and perfect for the Thrifty Six ‘Brighten up January’ theme!”

Such a fabulous blue, Emma!! I love it especially with the yellow- soooo goood!!!
Thanks so much Lucy!
I didn’t even know it was blue Monday! Abs I also haven’t even heard New Order on the radio! You always brighten the web up with your fabulous colourful looks!
Thanks very much Nancy. Blue Monday was made up as a marketing gimmick to sell holidays, but by the third Monday of January I think we’re all ready for it to be over!
Oh January and I don’t get on really well either, Emma! What a fabulous theme to uplift both of our spirits. I love these shades of blue and turquoise together and the yellow is the perfect bit of extra for a bold and bright winter outfit. I need some yellow boots in my life!
Shelbee
Thanks Shelbee! January is a bit if a drag isn’t it? It’s getting dark two minutes later every evening, which is a relief!
I love those beautiful boots! What a fun pop of color! This color combination will definitely brighten up any dull January day!
Thanks so much Laura!
I’m loving the blue!

Thank you Jennifer!
I’ve never heard of Blue Monday, but I love the theme you chose and that you decided to wear blue in a good way! In fact, a lot of us chose blue this month – funny. The yellow is a great pairing with it!

Thanks Grace! Blue Monday was actually made up to sell holidays but I think a lot of us feel a bit meh by mid January!
I love blue and yellow together! I haven’t heard of blue Monday before – maybe we don’t have it here as January is summer and so usually a fun and cheerful month for us? haha! 🙂 But I’m always down for colourful outfits like this, and you know I love blue! 🙂
Thanks for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup this week 🙂 Hope that you are having a great weekend 🙂
