Do you feel a bit sad when you pack your summer clothes away, knowing you probably won’t see them again for another six months? That’s how I feel every autumn, which is a bit silly I know. But, with a few simple styling tricks, you can in fact, wear some of your summer clothes all year round. Skirts are easy because you can just switch sandals for boots and tights. With dresses, it’s all about layering – either underneath or over the top…or both if it’s very cold. This shirt dress is a great example of how much mileage you can get out of your summer wardrobe.

Styling a shirt dress for winter is easy with the addition of a few wardrobe staples

The loose fit means I can fit a turtleneck jumper underneath (and a vest too if needed). I’ve chosen tights and knee boots, but I’m going to experiment with faux leather leggings and biker boots. I used the same jumper and similar boots to turn a jersey sleeveless wrap dress into a winter outfit too.

A cream, black or brown long coat would be perfect for this outfit. If I needed an extra indoor layer I’d opt for my black faux fur gilet or a long cardigan (which in hindsight, I wish I’d photographed!). Playing around with layers is fun, and means you can add and remove them according to temperature, which is important for those of us experiencing hormonal turbulence! Styling a shirt dress for winter is easy with the addition of a few wardrobe staples.

High street labels at huge discounts

This tiger print shirt dress is actually a new addition to my wardrobe, sent to me by Claire who runs an online business called London Glamour Garden. Claire sells excess stock from stores when they no longer need all the items they’ve ordered from the manufacturer, or when they close down. The website says which retailer the clothes and accessories are from, albeit with a little spelling alteration (presumably for legal reasons). Everything on the site is massively discounted; this shirt dress for example, is by Blue Chameleon – a subsidiary of Debenhams and is marked down to £14.99. Technically speaking, it could be considered fast fashion, but as the clothes have already been produced, by selling them at such a big discount, it ensures they are not going to landfill.

You can find clothes, footwear and accessories from labels such as Oasis, Clarks, Monsoon, New Look and Topshop on the London Glamour Garden website. Claire regularly posts items in stock on her Instagram account, with styling tips and ideas. Why not take a look and bag yourself a bargain!

This is exactly the same reason why I recently bought a couple of big coz knit cardigans, so I could wear all my dresses when it’s chilly! I’m loving that dress on you. I just checked out London Garden and they’ve got a fabulous pair of thigh high gold boots!!!

Love the way you winterized this zebra print dress-shirt dresses are so versatile and that a great bargain this one was! I morn the packing away of my spring and summer wardrobe, also. Can’t wait to unpack it, again!

  11. Thank you for featuring my post and me. That was a big surprise, especially, since the article was about the physics of yarns. I love your zebra print inspired dress. Ok, it could be also tiger inspired. Who knows? But this cut and print and colors are just great. Nice styling. Thanks for hosting the party.

An awesome look, Emma! And wow, the dress was a steal. So cool that it is not heading for the landfill too. The companies that do that are truly infuriating.

That print is fabulous and you did a great job of putting together a seasonally appropriate look for it. I typically don’t do a lot of seasonal separation with my wardrobe except for my footwear primarily due to limited closet space. Because of that, my Spring/Summer sandals and such are moved to the higher and less accessible shelves in the Fall when I bring down my boots. In early April, I repeat the process only in reverse.

What a great outfit. I extend my outfit and winterize my summer pieces. Then again, I live in Louisiana so our winters are not terribly intense {although we do have quite a few really cold days}.

  15. Lovely says:

That’s a beautiful print on the dress and I love how you layered it for Winter.

This is a beautiful printed dress on you and it layers so well with all the black! It’s a nice idea that they are able to sell off unwanted stock at a discount so it doesn’t add to landfill too! 🙂

  21. Such a cute dress! I really love the neutral print and how you layered a black turtleneck under it. I just purchased a black turtleneck, so I’m all about using it in different ways!

  23. Wearing the turtleneck underneath is a great tip! I’ve done that with sleeveless dresses, but not a shirtdress like this. I need to try it!

  24. Alexandra says:

Such a great more neutral outfit! This is definitely up my alley. Love the idea of repurposing outfits throughout the year with this little trick.
