I really struggled with this month’s theme – probably because I don’t watch many films. Grace chose the prompt of On Screen Style Icons, which left me completely baffled. Maybe I over thought it (no maybe about it!). My first idea was Carrie Bradshaw, but none of my outfit choices for her were preloved. Then, while I was searching for inspiration online, I kept seeing images of Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan.
This vintage cropped jacket has been hanging on my wall as decoration and it seemed like a good likeness to the one Madonna wore in the film. So I grabbed it, along with these second hand Zara harem pants as the starting point to recreate Madonna’s iconic look. It’s not an exact replica because Madonna wore black trousers, but these metallic ones are the closest I have to her baggy, cropped style. I don’t have a cross necklace either so I substituted that for a heart. If I’d had more time I would have layered a few more necklaces, but I only got back from holiday the night before and couldn’t remember where anything was! I did have some lace gloves like Madonna’s but I forgot to put them on. Actually, I think the outfit looks better without them.
For the head tie, I used a black velvet scarf doubled over twice to make it thinner. It was difficult to make it stay put, but it worked long enough for the photos! Sometimes you have to improvise!

“I wanted to pick a more creative theme this time (my ideas in the past have been lame) and decided on On Screen Style Icons. I toyed with dressing as Blair Waldorf, Holly Golightly, Mindy Lahiri…the possibilities of stylish movie and TV characters are endless. But then I realized, I’ve been watching Better Call Saul with my boyfriend and absolutely love how badass Kim Wexler is—and I’m obsessed with her workwear style! So I decided to create a Kim-inspired lawyer outfit with this secondhand pencil skirt. I even included details like her dainty stud earrings, subtle black eyeliner, and signature ponytail (although I couldn’t figure out the single curl).”

“One of my all time favorite On Screen Style Icons is Diane Keaton so she was my inspiration for this thrifty look which layers a full brocade mini skirt over a midi length linen shirt dress (both thrifted) for a funky spin on her classic style. I added a preloved polka dot necktie to honor her Annie Hall days but I couldn’t decide which second-hand blazer was best, black velvet or houndstooth, or no blazer at all, so I am sharing all three looks for you to decide!”

“Kat Farmer is known for her role in BBC One’s fashion styling show, You Are What You Wear. But she is an Insta influencer and that is where I know her from. I adore her style, I love it, want to wear it, own it, etc. Simple, a lot of black, but it’s more how she wears it! This woman is so relaxed about her looks. It’s almost annoying, lol. I decided to copy this outfit from Kat Farmer because she is my on screen style icon. And because black is my favourite colour. It does make me happy that such a popular woman gets away with wearing a lot of black. I feel fantastic in this outfit, it couldn’t be more me! Pre loved skirt, €6, from Vinted, but the previous owner lived in my village. So I could collect it at her house! Even more a bargain.”

“I went with Helen Mirren, because after I saw her in the movie, Red, she has become my adult icon. Not only do I love her style, but also her attitude and wit. I always say I want to grow up to be her. Truthfully, most of her photos are with formal gowns, so I found one of her from the Cannes Festival. In fact, I had created a look that was more similar until I realized that I needed thrifted items, haha. So I changed to this Cabi jacket that I found recently while thrifting and the shoes used to be my bestie’s shoes and I inherited them when she passed away.”

“Inspired by a timeless goddess…
April’s T6 theme is ‘On Screen Style Icons’, there must be soooo many to choose from…
However, if you name any famous film, I guarantee I won’t have seen it!
I’m not a movie fan but this sheer lace dress really reminds me of something Cher once wore…
…so here I am paying homage to the truly timeless goddess herself.
Big hair and a barely-there dress – all the semi-naked glamour of Cher’s red-carpet appearances circa 1986.”

Emma, despite your struggle, I think you succeeded brilliantly! This outfit is so fabulous…the jacket, the harem pants, the shoes, the head scarf. I love Madonna’s style in DSS and once tried to recreate this outfit but I had absolutely nothing that would do it justice. You, my friend, have definitely done it justice! Well done!

Fantastic! What a trip down to memory lane. Fashion wise. I didn’t like the movie, but loved the looks! How creative are you! And even more because you had such little time, chapeau!
I just love how this came together Emma. I used to be such a Madonna fan. Heck, you should see one of my photos from college, haha.
