Nothing screams Christmas like sequins and glitter…not that I’m suggesting for one minute that you should confine them to the festive season! Sequin skirts must be very popular because I had to hunt high and low to find this one (which is now sold out but I’ve selected lots of alternatives at the bottom of the post). I haven’t been to any Christmas parties this year but maybe everyone is opting for a sequin skirt over the traditional LBD? As sequins and glitter are such a massive trend at the moment I thought I’d share my tips on how to add a little sparkle to your festive outfit…without going OTT!
The key to wearing sequins without looking like you’ve fallen off the top of the Christmas tree is to wear them on either the top or bottom half. I chose a sequin jacket and jeans for last year’s outfit, for a sparkly but casual Christmas outfit. This year I really wanted a sequin pencil skirt in a midi length. There are a lot of sequin mini skirts and dresses out there but they are just not practical or flattering for me. A midi-length pencil skirt works well for my body shape and means I can wear it during the day too.
This Oasis skirt falls mid-calf on me, but it was sitting low on the waist because sadly it’s a bit too big. It’s a tube skirt so has no waistband, it’s just straight up and down. The weight of the sequins pulls it down so it doesn’t feel secure. It pains me greatly but I’ll have to send it back. This is a medium so I’ll know in future that Oasis sizing runs large. My husband helpfully suggested that I could polish off the tin of Quality Street guilt-free, but then I wouldn’t be able to fit into most of my existing wardrobe!
Because the skirt is quite a show-stopper I paired it with a black pussy bow top, which is basically a jumper pimped up to look like a blouse. I’ve had it years and wear it lots for work. I added a bit more glitter and shine with my silver Carvela shoes and the clutch bag I chose for my Matalan Blogger of the Month Feature. Accessories are a good way to buy into the trend if the thought of wearing sequins and glitter fills you with trepidation. If ever you needed an excuse to buy more shoes and bags this is it 😉
Although I couldn’t exchange this skirt for a smaller size I have managed to find a few suitable alternatives, including one very unusual one on eBay, so I’ll keep you posted!
Skirt: Oasis | top: New Look (old but this one is similar and this black and white one is utterly stunning!) | shoes: Carvela | ring: charity shop

Thanks Kelsey!
Are you really sending it back? It looks absolutely stunning on you. How about folding the top and adding some inch wide elastic loosely ? Not puckering up, but just enough to make it feel like it’s not going to fall down.

I know, I really want to keep it. I wish I was better at basic sewing skills. Maybe it’s worth asking a seamstress.
Love that skirt on you! Definitely made for the holiday parties 🙂

Thanks Abby!
I have seen a lot of mini sequin skirts in stores and I agree that they are not flattering for everyone including me! If I could find one like yours I think I would buy it. I love how you styled it!
Thank you Lanae 🙂 I think midi pencil skirts are the easiest way to wear sequins, and I’ve seen them in lots of different colours.
Oh my, your ring is stunning! I love it. But the skirt is gorgieus too, it’s a pitty you can’t keep it. I saw a sequin skirt at h&m and I was doubting. It was a pink one and I would love to wear it with a red sweater. Perhaps I’ll go back……..and hope it’s sold out!
Thank you Nancy! Sometimes I “hope” things will be sold out so I’m not compelled to buy them!
Great idea! I need a sequins skirt like yours! So pretty, Your shoes are super cute too!
Thank you so much for your kind comments on my blog and don’t forget to come back every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to join the linkup party!
