Styling the European Summer Trend – August’s Thrifty Six

I’m not usually one to jump on a TikTok trend, but I thought this one would be fun to dive into for August’s Thrifty Six theme. Styling the European Summer trend can be interpreted in different ways, and I love how we’ve all put our own twist on it. According to Refinery29 the “European Summer” or “Euro Girl Summer” aesthetic “puts an emphasis on “clean”, elevated outfits — this time taking elements from classic French and Italian style”.

Styling the European Summer trend was harder than I expected, but then I do like to challenge myself!

Of course, the weather conditions vary quite a lot depending on where you are in Europe. A floaty summer dress is going to work better in Italy or the French Riviera than in Sweden! What I take from the trend is that it’s about capturing more of a Parisian or Mediterranean vibe: tailored classics, silk scarves, neutral accessories – none of which I tend to wear very often! (It’s certainly not chanelling Manchester in late August, which would involve a raincoat!) Styling the European Summer trend was actually harder than I expected, but then I do like to challenge myself!

I tried several outfit combinations, but decided on this postcard print wrap blouse that I bought on eBay years ago. It reminds me of a silk scarf. European destinations feature in the print so that ties in with the theme too. I’ve never worn it before because I find the cropped style difficult to wear. I’m not one to show my midriff, and when I bought it I was hoping it would be longer. I’ve just about made it work with these classic high-waisted navy trousers, although I had to keep adjusting it. I think my preferred way to wear it would be over a vest or a body-skimming column dress. The basket bag from Zara and gold wedge espadrilles let the blouse be the star of the show. I finished off the look with classic gold and pearl jewellery.

“This month’s T6 theme is ‘European Summer’ so I’m wearing red, white and blue to represent Great Britain…

…and also, a little nod to the Paris Olympics…

…but mainly because I want to show off my beautiful red, white and blue vintage maxi skirt.

This 1970’s original is an eclectic mix of patterns, colours and fabrics with the interesting addition of completely see-through crochet sections at each side.

The pretty perforated panels provide perfect ventilation on this, the hottest day of the year!

At 34˚C in the shade, this is a great European Summer day!”

“I saw a fun video about how the same dress could be worn in different European countries and decided to do that with this navy dress. While the dress isn’t thrifted, the skirt and hat are preloved and this look reminds me of a girl from Spain.”

“I have never been to Europe in the summer but based on Nancy’s description of it, I dressed for fickle temperatures and a chance of rain with lightweight layers and useful accessories. I wore a thrifted slip dress and jacket both in cheerful pink prints because they coordinated with my very old pink and black rain galoshes. A cloche hat offers practical protection from the sun or the rain. Now I am ready for any European summer weather!”

“European summer might be a fashion style, I can tell you a real European summer is wet and grey! And cold! So what I wore this season is these jeans, and you know how I feel about jeans. But it was too cold and wet to wear something really nice. I layered it with my new shirtdress, so if it started to warm up I could take off the jeans, which is the only pre-loved item. Luckily August is finally sunny and warm and I am embracing my dresses and skirts finally!”

“I thought it would be fun to create an outfit from a mish-mash of various “European Summer” aesthetic trends I found online: denim, white T, wide leg pants, button down shirt, loose-fitting silhouettes, leopard print, silk square scarf, pendant necklace, simple mix-and-match jewelry, neutral colors, and flashes of red.  Finally, I anchored my look with two thrifted pieces: my trusty button-up denim shirt and a vintage silk scarf in aqua and red by Italian brand Roberta di Camerino (the hand-rolled edges are amazing).  I loved how this outfit turned out!”

What a fabulous outfit! Those trousers are very nice especially with those buttons. And the top is fantastic. Just croped enough and it looks amazing on the high waist trousers!

  2. Jennifer says:

I adore those trousers and bag!

  3. Emma, that top is so perfect for this aesthetic! I love it paired with those glorious high waisted trousers. I am the same with cropped tops. I like the way they look but I am so uncomfortable wearing them. It gets too drafty! I think this top paired over a long body skimming dress would look amazing!

  4. That top is gorgeous, and the gold + pearl jewelry are the perfect touch!
