It was Shelbee’s turn to set the theme for this month’s Thrifty Six challenge and she chose “Unbuttoned”. I was glad of an easy one with everything else going on. Wearing a shirt dress as a duster was the first thing that came to mind. This dress works well worn unbuttoned because it has a robe-like look with the flared sleeves. I bought it on eBay a few years ago and have only worn it once before, that time as a dress.
Keeping to a colour palette of blue and white with red accents, I layered the dress over a striped tee and jeans. The bag belonged to my mum and picks out the cute cherry motif on the dress. (I’m also wearing beaded cherry earrings.) The shoes were a £1 charity shop bargain some years ago. A gold and blue ring and necklace completed the look.
I’m still decompressing after the funeral and trying to regain some kind of equilibrium. It all went well and I was really uplifted by being with family and friends. My dad came to stay over the weekend, which was lovely. Thursday is GCSE results day (fingers crossed for Isobel!) and then we’re going straight to Edinburgh to see AC/DC at Murrayfield stadium. The summer is going so fast, I can’t believe it will soon be autumn. I skipped last week’s link up post because I was mentally exhausted with last minute funeral preparations, but normal service will resume this week.

Essential Antwerp dress (eBay) | Mango tee (old) | River Island jeans | shoes from a charity shop | Dune bag | Zara earrings | Emilio Pucci sunglasses | Azuni necklace

“I found this blue floral shirt dress on a recent thrifting adventure when I wasn’t even supposed to be looking at clothing! But I couldn’t resist the color and the floral print so I bought it. I love maxi shirt dresses because they can easily double as dusters for layering. I layered a white preloved sundress beneath my unbuttoned shirt dress then I tied the matching floral fabric belt around my hat for a matching hat band. My necklace was made by my friend Michelle and my earrings were preloved. My blue sandals are very old.”

“For the “unbuttoned” theme, I could not resist styling one of my long-sleeved check print button-up shirts as a lightweight jacket over a sleeveless top for some easy summer layering. I created a fun print mix by pairing the thrifted Tommy Hilfiger black and white check shirt with a thrifted Talbots skirt in a bold and colorful floral print. I finished this cheerful outfit with whimsical jewelry, all handmade except for the short floral necklace.”

“”Unbuttoned” is the T6 theme for August – this opus in denim and gold hits the brief in three ways…
· The exquisite golden jacquard evening coat is worn literally ‘unbuttoned’
· Washed-out jeans give a relaxed, ‘unbuttoned’ feel to an otherwise glamorous ensemble
· A risqué sheer lace vest, the reverse of ‘buttoned up’, the epitome of freedom and confidence
Undo your buttons and set your spirit free!…”

“Here’s my unbuttoned…worn UNDER a crop top. I figured my crew could showcase all the different ways to wear them, and I chose the complicated one. All the clothing is preloved/thrifted and my mom told me that with my hair like this, I looked like a 1940s housewife.”

“The unbuttoned item is not pre loved. But I love this outfit so much that I wanted to share. The dress is from the shop I used to work for and bought, for the first time, when I was working. Wore it to pieces with red ballerinas. Years and years later I came across the dress on Vinted and could not resist! Only this time the dress didn’t give me that fabulous feel as it did back then.
It is still a lovely dress. Polka dots are so frivolous and feminine. And I adored those sandals. The dress has red little buttons and red piping at the ruffles and sleeves, which are puff ones. So, a unbuttoned red cardigan is the perfect layering for this one.”

First, I’m sending you hugs of comfort. I hope your memories of your mom give you more comfort in the days ahead. Second, I love this look because it’s so bright and cheerful. Your dress/duster looks perfect over the tee and jeans. I do hope your daughter’s test results are good. I assume that will help in making choices about schooling?

Emma, I have been keeping you in my thoughts and prayers through this difficult time. I love that you used a bag that belonged to your mum. I very much felt my mother in the outfit I created for this challenge. I wore her favorite color. And like you, I opted for a long shirt dress worn open as a duster. Your polka dot duster is amazing! I love all the little details from the piping on the cuffs and pockets to the cherries on the pocket. What an amazing preloved find! And you have styled it perfectly, too!
Shelbee
I have been thinking of you Emma, It is great you chose a bag from your mom. When my Dad passed he had almost nothing to his name, as he threw everything out! That I imagine is certainly special. I love that this dress is worn as a duster and yes, so perfect with the sleeves. The barrel jeans look great on you too!
