When Shelbee sent us the prompt of “Feels Like Home”, I immediately thought of my childhood, and the patterns and colours of the 70s. I remember orange and brown featuring heavily in our house, which is probably why I love these colours together. There is still an orange wooden chair at my mum’s – it’s gone full circle and is back in fashion again!
I’ve collected a lot of vintage and retro pieces over the last few years, including this brown and orange shirt. It’s handmade and typical of the 1970s. I teamed it with my very old brown trousers that I wear a lot over the winter. I topped it off with this burnt orange faux leather coat with a shaggy faux fur trim. I’ve featured it on the blog once before, with a suit from The Hippie Shake. My bag is also preloved, bought from eBay many years ago. I made the earrings myself from polymer clay. They were my first experiment with polymer clay and I was really pleased with how they turned out. I’m eager to make another batch when the madness of Christmas is over. I may even try my hand at selling some next year.

“Although I chose the theme, I ended up struggling which is why I am so last minute! And today of all days, I really do not feel like leaving my home…it is cold and snowy here. So my photos are very homey in front of my Christmas tree all snuggled up in a navy blue preloved shawl that was gifted to me from our next door neighbor at our first home. It was the home we bought in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where we had planned to raise our family until the Army changed those plans!
So this lovely vintage shawl that was passed on to me from that lovely neighbor really reminds me of our very special first home where we welcomed both of our children into our lives. I layered it on top of a super cozy thrifted oversized knit dress in deep plum. I picked this dress up for a few dollars at a local thrift shop for the exact purpose of using it for loungewear and so this is a fun opportunity to share it now.”
“What a fitting theme since this is my first day back at home with my family. I decided on an edgy look featuring this teal hand-me-down sweater, which my mom gave me. Nothing feels more like home than spending time with my mom!”

“Feels like home…
…is December’s Thrifty Six theme.
Everything I’m wearing is comfy, cosy and quilted – how homely is that!
Standing outside my own front door, dressed head to toe in true vintage pieces, this definitely feels like home to me…”
“At what feels like home, I immediately had to think of outfits from the past that reflect myself. So more coming home in terms of style. This skirt does that for me. And although this skirt, which I bought for a second time, which you can read more about here, is too short and I have already sold it, this style somehow brings me back to my puberty. It’s a bit classic, it’s black, pretty simple, doesn’t need much accessorizing and it feels a bit punky, new wave, 80s, you know? So it feels like home! Like me!”

Emma, I love this outfit and I love your interpretation of the theme. Actually, I love everyone’s interpretations of the theme. This was really fun and created some amazing looks with beautiful stories behind them!

I love this outfit, Emma! Fabulous! I love the clothing and colors of the late 60’s and early 70’s, having grown up with all those colors and styles too.
