New Year's Eve Outfits - December's Thrifty Six

Are you all ready for the festivities? I did my last shift at work for a couple of weeks yesterday and enjoyed not having to set an alarm for the first time in weeks! On Christmas Eve I’ll drive to my mum’s to bring her to our place for a couple of days. Her dialysis schedule means she can’t stay for any longer, but after not seeing her last Christmas I’m grateful for whatever time I can get with her. When I take her back, I’ll stay a few days to make the most of it. We’ve been invited to friends’ for New Year’s Eve…Covid rules permitting! Who knows what will drop on us before then! But in the meantime, me and The Thrifty Six ladies are sharing our New Year’s Eve outfits!

New Year's Eve Outfits - December's Thrifty Six, Boohoo striped sequin kimono jacket, Very black velvet trousers, TU black sparkly turtleneck jumper

I know sequins are not good for the environment, but I love this jacket and will keep it forever

I’d been looking for a sequin kimono for ages, but it seems they are few and far between. Those I did find were way too expensive. Then recently, I saw this kimono style jacket on eBay that was within my budget so I nabbed it. Although it is from Boohoo I figured buying second hand mitigates the impact of buying something from a fast fashion brand. I know sequins are not good for the environment, but I love this jacket and will keep it forever. The fit is very relaxed and loose, and because it has no fastenings I decided to try it belted. This gives the outfit some shape, but it’s still comfortable as the belt is stretchy.

As we won’t be going “out out” this New Year’s Eve, the emphasis is on comfort and staying warm enough. This sparkly turtleneck jumper is ideal for layering underneath the loose-fitting jacket. I bought it in a charity shop during the height of summer – the cashier must have thought I was crazy buying a jumper when it was baking hot! But I often buy clothes out of season and put them away – maybe I should have named this blog Style Squirrel!

I’ve teamed my sparkly top and sequin jacket with black velvet trousers, gold boots and a mustard velvet bag. The boots are long and slouchy but not too bulky to wear underneath trousers. The black sparkly druzy ring matches my top while the purple one picks up on the colours in the jacket. I couldn’t decide which one to wear…so I wore both! Always be extra!

Desdemona Duchess of Deco…On New Year’s Eve, I’m going to an Art Deco themed Murder Mystery Evenin…I’m Desdemona, Duchess of Daggerford (and all things Art Deco). I have an inkling I might be guilty as sin…Light was against me when taking these pictures but this 80’s vintage dress is black with sparkling silver sequins…and tiger stripes for the dangerous tiger I am! (Desdemona that is; not me, I’m a pussycat).

“Holiday dressing up is my favourite! Loving this quilted, hand-made, vintage maxi skirt-especially worn with this sparkly thrifted top and necklace. I snatched this skirt from Karalyne of Best Dressed Wallflower. Her vintage selection is superb, don’t you agree? Perfect for kicking off the holidays!”

“I have been searching for years for the perfect golden top and I found it in a vintage shop nearby. It’s by Cilo and really old. I will definitely wear this top, probably with a black tulle skirt, I am not sure yet. However I love the combination with the green!”

“I found these sequined leggings and velvet tunic at the consignment shop where I used to work. The top I have had for a few years but have never worn it. I bought the leggings in the spring and haven’t had an opportunity yet to wear them. NYE was the perfect reason to style them. I styled this outfit with two different coats…a long plaid duster jacket and a white boucle coat. I would love to hear your thoughts on which is better but you have to hop on over to my page to see them! Happy Holidays!”

“Even though I’ve already shared this unique blue dress with the Thrifty Six before, I just knew I had to style it again for a New Year’s Eve look. I switched up my hair, added bedazzled fishnet tights, wore black furry accessories, and added some dramatic hoop earrings. My favorite part about this thrifted dress is the long sleeves—finally, a glitzy yet practical outfit for a chilly NYE!”

That’s a wrap for 2021! We’ll be back in January for another thrifty collaboration!

Can you believe that I have not, I repeat not, have anything sequin in my closet(s). And I do love it! Your jacket screams disco! all night dancing…… do you remember those days, lol.

  3. Emma, this jacket is so freaking cool! I love the color blocking with the sequins. How fun! I hear you about sequins being bad for the environment. I feel the same way about my glitter eyeliner. I know it is so bad to wash that stuff into our water source, but glittery eyes really cheer me especially when wearing masks everywhere we go. I love this whole look you put together for a festive but comfortable NYE at home! Wishing you the very merriest Christmas and all the best in the coming year, my friend!
