Red-y For the Holiday Season - The Thrifty Six December collage

The Thrifty Six are back with the last collaboration of 2020…and what a year we’ve had! It’s been challenging for sure, but we are red-y for the holiday season in our preloved finds.

The Thrifty Six

We are a group of international fashion and lifestyle influencers who collaborate each month to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we all share an outfit based on a theme that features pre-loved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here to inspire you to shop second hand!

…it came as a surprise when I realised I have very few preloved clothes in red

Red is one of my favourite colours – if not THE favourite – so it came as a surprise when I realised I have very few preloved clothes in red. This vintage military style jacket had been on my eBay watch list for a few days when Grace chose the title of “Red-y For the Holiday Season” for this month; that gave me the excuse I needed to buy it! (Not that I ever need an excuse!) I paid the grand sum of £5 (plus postage) for it, which was a total bargain. The quality is fantastic, much better than I anticipated. It does need a dry clean as there’s a mark on one of the arms, but I’m hoping that will come out.

I really wanted the red to stand out, so I paired it with a zebra print skirt that I bought from the Marks & Spencer outlet a couple of years ago. Winter is the only time I wear mini skirts because I only wear them with tights. Long boots and military jackets is a favourite winter combination of mine. A black peaked cap would look great with this outfit…I’ll have to dig mine out. The faux leather black bag and cat eye sunglasses complete the look. There’s no need to over complicate an outfit like this – the bright red jacket and zebra print skirt are enough to make an impact.

Let’s see how my thrifty friends are getting red-y for the holiday season…

“It was my turn to pick the theme this month, and I immediately knew I wanted to feature this red thrifted BCBG dress that I purchased for only $1! As I started adding accessories, I realized this old fashioned purse (which was more expensive than the dress – $6!) and this gorgeous sparkly necklace were both thrifted as well. While not the most practical holiday outfit for 2020, it’s always fun and uplifting to play a little dress up.”

“I’m Little Red Riding Hood…lost in the forest on my way to grandmother’s house…only kidding – it’s me, Jane! Red’s the theme for the Thrifty Six December style focus and I’m taking it to the max! This is an authentic Scandinavian, pure wool maxi skirt, I’ve teamed it with a chunky pillarbox red sweater and a quirky vermilion beret. The accent colour is tan, a great contrast to the red and it picks up the orangey stitch detail in the skirt. Dressed head to toe in red I feel totally empowered! – I don’t often wear this colour but now I’m tempted to become a ‘Scarlet Woman’!!!”

“And here we are, The Thrifty Six, with such an appropriate theme for Christmas: Red! I had such a blast putting together this gorgeous thrifted ensemble. There’s nothing I love more than an easy right off the rack outfit that says: Ready to Go! I paired it with my all time favourite sequin vest…and then opted for the two- different-coloured booties!  A true mish-mash that speaks originality- just like I love!”

“Nothing I am wearing here is pre loved. When this photo was taken, about 5 years ago, I wasn’t into pre loved. But……Castor was pre loved!! We bought him, that sounds weird, we were so lucky to call him ours, also weird but alla, from a breeder. Who, of course otherwise we wouldn’t have ended up at her place, loved her cats to pieces. So this is my pre loved ‘item’! Castor! Yeah right, but he is not red, I hear you say. No indeed, I am a bit cheating this month. But he does wear a red Santa jacket which I got from a friend years ago. So a pre loved cat with a hand me down jacket!”

“I recently found this red tartan blazer at my local Thrifty Shopper and it was so perfect for the holiday season that I just couldn’t resist it. Although I had absolutely no reason for purchasing it other than I thought it was so cute…until Grace called Red for this month’s theme! My Harley Davidson tank top, my jeans, and a few of my pearl strands were also preloved items purchased a few years ago. Everything else was shopped from my closet. This combination was inspired by a Gwen Stefani outfit that she was wearing recently on The Voice!”

Well that’s all from the Thrifty Six for this year…here’s hoping for a healthy and happy 2021!

What a beautiful, flattering outfit! I really like the short zebra skirt with the tall boots. Was just thinking the other day that I needed to find myself a red moto jacket while they’re around right now. Red jacket is a fun way to dress up a black outfit for the holidays.

I love those buttons on that jacket! You really have a eye for a good bargain! It’s a gorgeous color!

  3. Emma, what a fantastic thrift find in this red jacket! It has such a cool vibe with the fun buttons. And I love the zebra print pairing with it, too! You look amazing! I am having a good chuckle that both you and Nancy didn’t have any red thrifted items and I had about a dozen different red thrifted things to choose from! But then, my shopping addiction might be worse than the rest! Haha. I absolutely love how everyone styled up Grace’s theme this month! Happy Holidays!

Such a gorgeous piece Emma! I love the buttons, and you can’t beat that price. The zebra print skirt is really cute too. And I agree, red is one of my favorite colors to wear!
