This last week I’ve been trying to tidy up and get organised for Christmas (easier said than done!). Even though it will just be the three of us I want to make the house look nice so I can just relax for Christmas and Boxing Day. When I finally forced myself to tackle the clothes mountain that had built up in the spare bedroom I unearthed this coat and trousers. They just happened to be next to each other and it struck me they’d pair well together.
An easy way to pattern clash is to stick to the same colours. Combining zebra print and houndstooth with bright pink keeps the colour palette simple; there’s a tiny bit of red in the bag, but apart from that the outfit sticks to a basic three colour formula. My favourite “third colours” to team with a predominantly black and white outfit are red, hot pink and yellow (which I chose for June’s Style Not Age post). I like the contrast of a bright colour, especially during the winter when the light is low. I know I’ve mentioned this before, but wearing black next to my face is not so flattering these days. If I want to wear a black jacket, layering a brightly-coloured high neck top or sweater underneath counteracts the draining effect. A colourful scarf or necklace can achieve the same result too when wearing a black dress.
Apart from imparting a glow to my complexion, bright colours really help to lift my mood during the winter. We’ve had some very gloomy, rainy days when everywhere just looks grey and dark. I’m hoping we get some snow over winter…lovely thick fluffy snow that crunches underfoot. It’s very unlikely but I can dream!

I am actually wearing black and white today and should have added a bright color as it is a rainy day here! I love how simple pattern mixing is when you use the same color.
