Wearing Pre-loved Floral Prints – May’s Thrifty Six

Happy Monday! I hope you had a good weekend. This month, the Thrifty Six are wearing pre-loved floral prints. My dress is from…you guessed it…eBay! Another vintage treasure I found on my favourite resale platform. The brown and orange print really drew me to it, and when the seller offered me a lower price than the starting bid I didn’t hesitate in buying it. Often, sellers will make an offer a little bit lower than then starting bid to anyone who’s watching the item, so even if there’s a “Buy it now” option, if there’s also a “Make offer” option, you know the seller is probably willing to lower the price. I’ve scored loads of bargains this way.

I knew from the measurements that this dress would be a bit loose on the waist, but I was sure a belt would remedy that. There are belt loops, so it obviously had a matching belt at one time, but that has been lost. Another thing I didn’t notice – until after I’d taken these photos actually – was a missing button on one of the cuffs which has been replaced with a small brooch. The brooch is rather nice but I think I’ll replace the buttons (they’re grey and don’t really compliment the dress) and put the brooch on a hat instead.

This was the first time I’d worn the dress and I felt so good in it so I kept it on for the school run

Aside from the missing belt and button, I’m delighted with this dress; it’s very comfortable and lightweight, so even though it has long sleeves I won’t get too hot in it. The belt I’ve added is elasticated at the back so doesn’t feel restrictive but it still cinches in my waist, giving the dress a nice shape. In colder weather I could swap the sandals for brown boots and layer a long cardigan over it – maybe putting the belt over the cardigan to retain the nice shape. My orange fringed bag adds to the boho vibe and matches my sandals and jewellery.

This was the first time I’d worn the dress and I felt so good in it so I kept it on for the school run (although I swapped these sandals for flat ones). It felt so nice to wear a dress after living in trousers for what seems like forever. Unfortunately after we grabbed our takeaway Costa coffee it started to rain and we had to run to the car! Oh dear, spring has been a bit of a disappointment this year.

The Thrifty Six is a group of six international fashion and lifestyle bloggers and influencers from all around the world. We share a love of buying preloved clothing and accessories. Our aim is to demonstrate how to be stylish in an environmentally friendly way. We take it in turns to choose a theme and at least one item in our outfit that fits the theme must be preloved or thrifted. Now let’s take a look at how the other ladies in the group are wearing pre-loved floral prints…

Florals on the edge of danger!…

Florals are pretty, florals are romantic, feminine and soft. Floral prints are gentle, delicate, sweet and joyful…

UhOh – Reeewind!

This is florals on the edge of danger!

In nature yellow and black warns of hazard; just look at creatures with a deadly sting or bite!

In human society, black leather and studs are badass!  Culturally associated with bikers, punks, deviants and mavericks.

Bring this all together and you get edgy, belligerent and powerful – Sometimes I like to take an idea and just shake it up a bit!”

Lucy of Lucy Bertoldi

“I’ve named this flowery dress/ jacket, a Dracket lol! I thrifted this one years ago, new tags and all- plus- it’s pure silk! Thought I’d pair it with these outrageous floral pants for a great hodgepodge look. The prints are totally different and yet they match due to common colours: Matching prints 101! It works perfectly here, don’t you think?! “

Grace of Graceful Rags

“I’m certain I have something thrifted and floral back at home, but since I’m at school, I had to venture out to find something new to fit this month’s theme… An excuse to go shopping. I’m not complaining! I found this absolutely adorable floral romper from a nearby consignment store and love the girly silhouette and cutout in the front. Now I just need a brunch to attend!”

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge

“I found this beautiful floral dress at the consignment shop when I worked there a few years ago. I love the color and the tiny print and the shirt dress style, but when I brought it home, it just didn’t fit quite right. Fast forward to now and I have lost a bit of weight making the fit much better for this dress. But when I styled it as a dress, It was cute but really kind of boring and so I opted to wear it as a jacket instead over my mostly thrifted outfit. Won’t you please stop by my blog for more details on these fun preloved pieces!”

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style

“These skirts are two different ones! You might think, well they look alike to me. They do! But the one on the left was a new one, bought somewhere in 2013/2014. I wore it so often, it was such a great skirt. But after a few years it was worn and washed out and I had to throw it away. The one on the right I bought pre loved in 2019! I was so happy to find it again! And I am wearing the same jacket on both photos! The jacket is from the time when I was still working, I stopped in 2012. This skirt is so versatile, I love to wear it with heels, sneakers, slippers! It’s super stretchy and so easy to wear! What a fab skirt!”

That’s all from the Thrifty Six for this month – we’ll be back with another thrifty theme on the third Monday of June!

That dress is absolutely delightful, Emma! Well done on snapping it up.
I’ve got quite a few vintage dresses with missing belts, but even so, I usually use a contrasting one or one with more impact, like you’ve done here. Regarding the missing button, I do agree the existing ones do not really compliment the dress. I’m sure you can make it even better with gorgeous new – or vintage – buttons! xxx

  7. Grace says:

Such a cute look! I never would have guessed it’s a bit big in the waist because the belt goes perfectly with it. I also love how your finger nails and shoes match the orange perfectly!

    Miles of smiles,
    Grace
