Animal Print But Not Leopard – October’s Thrifty Six Challenge

October 21, 2024

Happy new week! How was your weekend? Mine was fairly busy as we got the keys to mum’s bungalow just over a week ago but she can’t move in until it’s decorated and some new furniture has arrived. We’re moving stuff from the storage unit bit by bit, gradually it’s taking shape. I worked three long days last week which were very busy, so I’m ready for a more relaxing week this week. Pete is working away though so I’ll be holding the fort (in other words, providing a taxi service for the teenager!).

As it’s the third Monday of the month, it’s time for October’s Thrifty Six challenge. Nancy chose the theme of “Animal Print But Not Leopard”. Of all the animal prints, leopard features the most in my wardrobe, but snake comes in second. I bought this Scotch and Soda suit on Thrift+ a few years ago. Unlike my other snake print pieces, this pattern features intertwined snakes with googly eyes, rather than the usual scaly print.

I’ve featured this suit on the blog before with the same T-shirt and bag. The only main difference is the footwear which I’ve switched from sandals to stretchy trainers. One day I’ll get around to styling it differently, but burgundy is on trend so that’s my excuse!

“When it is my turn to choose a theme, I check my closet and see what I haven’t shown yet with The Thrifty Six. (It is on the blog though.) And that was this animal print dress. It’s definitely not leopard but I am not quite sure what it is then. I think it is giraffe.

I bought it on Vinted and it is from a brand where I already got two fantastic dresses from. I love the ruffles and the side split. I added the vest because it was still warm enough to wear the rather thin dress without a cardigan. And I wore my beloved black leather boots. The pre loved necklace is actually a bit too much for my liking, but I love my gun metal cuff.”

“Tyger Tyger, burning bright, in the forests of the night.
What immortal hand or eye could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies, burnt the fire of thine eyes?
If thy cannot Leopard be, then be a Tyger in disguise!
A little collaboration from myself and Willian Blake there, but essentially, I’m doing Tiger!”

“I know my bootie collection is pushing the edges of space, but I couldn’t resist this pair while thrifting this summer. They had never been worn, so I snagged them and put together this dark outfit with pops of yellow. The blouse, belt, purse, and of course, the booties are all second hand. In fact, I decorated the purse with a couple of charms and a scarf”

“Keeping leopard out of the mix was a bit challenging! I styled a thrifted wrap with an elephant print over a preloved floral print dress. Then I added two secondhand necklaces that feature elephants and a pair of my thrifted cowgirl boots for this budget friendly mixed print mayhem.”

“I’ve been in a making-summer-last mood so far this fall, so I chose a non-traditional animal print and color scheme for an autumn outfit: a thrifted bluebird print blouse in a blue and pink look.  The blouse dates from a Goodwill thrifting trip in 2019, bought at the bargain price of $5.24.  It’s from that short period of time when Loft sold plus size clothing (sigh).  To continue the bird theme, I upcycled a cover from Audubon magazine to make paper beads for my handmade necklace. This dusky rose cardigan is on the warmer side, so included with the jeans, I felt quite comfortable for an early fall day in this outfit.”

Oh Scotch&Soda was such a fabulous unique brand! Such a pity they don’t exist anymore. What a fabulous suit that is. A perfect substitute for leopard print!

  2. Emma, this set is so stinking cute! I love the google eyes on the snakes! The color blocking at the hem of the trousers is super fun, too. This is such a great outfit.

    Adore the print!
You may have solved my quandary of how to represent a snake next year’s Asian Year of the Wood Snake graphic that needs to get done.

  4. Anne M Bray says:

    oops. “… a snake FOR next year’s…”

  5. I love that the snake print is actual snakes rather than snakeskin – I love it for October Halloween vibes! It’s perfect with the burgundy T so I can see why you went for that combination again.

  6. Marsha Banks says:

Now, I don’t like snakes at all, but this is just the cutest snake print I’ve ever seen! I really like the details at the bottom of the legs, too! I think the burgundy tee works well. You have so many options with all the different colors in the print!
