The third and final holiday outfit post today! I wore this mint maxi dress in Monte – a charming parish about 500m above Funchal. A trip up to Monte on the cable car is a really fun thing to, and the views are amazing! The cable cars go over houses so it’s an opportunity to have a nosey at all the properties. Monte church (Nossa Senhora do Monte) isn’t very big, but it’s definitely worth a visit. We did this same excursion two years ago, but as we took my mother-in-law with us this time we decided to do it again. You can take another cable car further up to the botanical gardens but we left it too late in the day for that. We’ll just have to back again!

The cable car is fun but you can’t beat the famous toboggans for a thrill ride! Originally a fast means of transport down to Funchal for people living in Monte, these toboggan sledges appeared around 1850. The two-seater wicker sledges glide on wooden runners, pushed and steered by two men traditionally dressed in white cotton clothes and a straw hat. The “Carreiros” use their rubber-soled boots as brakes. The downhill journey from Monte to Livramento takes about 10 minutes, reaching speeds of up to 30mph. From there you can get a taxi back to Funchal, but we decided to walk down the very steep road, as we did last time. A taxi driver (who was obviously keen to get our business) told my mother-in-law that she’d never manage it, but she soon proved him wrong…she’ll be 82 next month! We rewarded ourselves with a much-deserved long, cold drink at the bottom of the hill.
